I remember when Charmin started advertising "the tissue that babies your skin" and how horrified people were that tp was being advertised on radio and TV and had a jingle that was catchy. Horrors! People might actually sing about toilet paper. Tampax and Kotex were advertised in print without any clue about what they were for except "that time of the month" because there were some subjects that were altogether taboo.
Whatsisname, The Father of My Children, was in radio and had to tape a commercial for a local department store that was having a big sale: "ladies' lingerie...half off" OMG! It was hard to keep a straight face. He finally pointed out to the agency that maybe they should sort of rearrange the copy. They did.
I have an old Ladies Home Journal from 1920 with an ad that says " Don't ask for toilet paper, ask for Scott Tissue......it's the proper thing to do....." because, y'know, "ladies" apparently didn't have bodily functions...
