An Inquiring Mind Wants To Know Is There Anything Good On Netflix or Prime?

Everyone I know who's watched Stranger Things (Netflix) loved it...this spans across generations, same for Sweet Tooth. The movie Extinction (Science Fiction, Netflix) was also very good IMO. My honorary son told me to watch The Foreigner; he assured me it's very good. It's on my list but I haven't gotten to it yet.

On Prime, I absolutely loved My Spy starring David Bautista. It's a heartwarming comedy about an FBI agent who gets busted by a smart as a whip 9 year old who's mother he's been tasked to spy on because her brother-in-law is a major criminal. I watched it twice. I'm watching Out of Time about a time traveling G-man tasked with catching parasitic aliens who inhabit humans' bodies with the end game to destroy humanity. He partners with a female officer who doesn't know what to make of him but continues to help him with his quest. It's a somewhat quirky film which is keeping me intrigued. If you like Horror, my oldest grandson told me to watch Train to Busan. It's subtitled and gory but I've seen worse and it's keeping me interested. I started watching Wheel of Time, a period piece but I haven't finished it. I'm sure you can find trailers for all of these either on Netflix and Prime or on YouTube. Trailers might help you to figure out if any are worth the full investment of your time.

No one has mentioned Game of Thrones yet, still streaming on HBO Canada.

Downton Abbey the series is on HBO too.

More recent, Yellowstone, Reacher, on Prime
Oh yeah...how could I have forgotten Reacher?!!! I loved the series (only 8 episodes) and intend to watch it again. Can't wait for S2.

DD and i are watching Stranger things together now on her days off, started 2 weeks ago and into S3 already. i watched Sweet Tooth S1 with my Grandson during their 2021 visit. If a 2nd Season up and he hasn't watched it yet we may watch together curing upcoming visit. When my kids were young i often watched shows they were drawn to with them as it they can be excellent conversation starters that teach kids elder can listen to their opinions and feelings, and can give elders insight to how the kids' minds work.

The Foriegner (Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan if one i'm thinking of) is excellent, more serious than most Jackie Chan films but he's very good in it. i've had My Spy on my Prime list for a long time, if still available maybe i'll watch this afternoon. i really enjoy Bautista even his commercial about streaming.

For those of you who have multiple streaming channels/options but hate wading thru when looking for something to watch there are some shortcuts.

Remember if you have one or two favorite genres, most of the channels have 'categories' where you can see mostly those genres. Some do show up under more than one section--like comic sci-fi, or sci-fi that borders on horror, action and sci-fi. They also usually put up a 'new' list at start or each month and have 'leaving soon' lists. But i know sometimes i'm not in the mood for doing all those steps to find something.

Then there's YouTube channels like 'Flick Connection'. When the guy (Darren Van Dam) started he only covered a couple of channels--like Netflix and Prime. But he's built a following and gained sponsors and i suspect other channels asked him to make lists about their shows so now he covers a lot more. i like his lists for several reasons:

The titles of his videos are usually clear about the genre and the channel they're on.

i get to see clips of say a lot of sci-fi, without having to repeatedly navigate in/out of trailers on streaming channels. When talking about channels that have both free with subscription and some shows you have to pay an extra to view/rent (like Prime) he'll advise if there's a fee.

At start of each month he does a new to Netflix show and lists dates of things leaving during that month.

He's honest about his tastes but aware of others and is good about saying things like 'I love these kind of action movies, but if it's not your cup of tea--you might want skip this one.' And you see the clips so get what he means. He also talks about directors, actors, their previous films he liked (or didn't) and why the film or show made his list. Often he'll mention a movie that he thinks if you liked it, you'll like the one he's talking about now.

Talks about pacing---some folks don't have patience with slow, quiet movies even if in a genre they generally like. Often i prefer the 'thinker' sci-fi, mystery and especially supernatural movies where they don't just jump to fear and gore but odd things occur, usually with increasing frequency and build to where it's clear the mundane explanations (supernatural)or obvious solutions (mystery) are not what's really going on. Other times i want fast paced action, tho sometimes you find nuggets of provoking thoughts in them.

Mentions the ratings, and warns against some that technically are rated for kids but that might be too intense for very young kids.

I just finished "Love on the Spectrum." It is about young people with autism who want to get married and how they go about meeting and dating them. It is on Netflix and there are 2 series .... one in the U.S. and the other in Australia. I enjoyed both of them. (They are reality shows though, for which a couple of you expressed dislike.) My twin grandsons are on the spectrum, so I was quite interested in watching both series.

How old are your twin grandsons? My grandson Liam, who is on the spectrum, is 13. When the family was being screened to receive assistance for therapy (which helped him regain verbal skills) the interview felt his Dad, my son, was likely neurodivergent but undiagnosed like many Boomers and Gen X folks.

My other son, his twin, from what i've learned over the years is likely undiagnosed but on the spectrum but since he didn't have diagnosis was able to join the Navy and serve for 20 yrs.

I watched Dawson's Creek and the OC on Netflix for the first time and loved both..took me back to my teen years :D I tried to watch Game of Thrones but the blood and gore got to me..I may or may not go back and finish the series..

@feywon - My grandsons just turned 12 and finished their first year of middle school. I don't know if my son, their father, or his wife were ever diagnosed as neurodivergent. (I had never heard that word and googled it just now.) The twins were diagnosed at age 3 and have received special help since then. They have been in a regular public school since kindergarten.

Let's see... here are a few good movies on Prime:

Marathon Man - about a Nazi who stole a bunch of diamonds, staring Dustin Hoffman
Out of Time - run of the mill action movie staring Denzel Washington
Three Days of the Condor - good movie about the CIA, staring Robert Redford.

what else?

Road to Perdition, it was good but I forget what it was about... the mafia, I think.
Eye in the Sky, about military drone attacks
Sideways, chick-flick with some humorous moments
Denial, good movie about a Holocaust denier
Flight, good movie about a celebrated pilot (Denzel Washington) who was drunk when he did what he did
The Color of Money, decent movie if you can stomach Tom Cruise
Taken, excellent action movie staring Liam Neeson
Kiss the Girls, good detective movie
The Courier, excellent WWII movie
Unbreakable, good Bruce Willis movie, he's the sole survivor of some kind of accident

It's 97° outside, so I'm killing time. 🤣

I think I'm going to watch Three Days of the Condor this evening. :)

I can’t speak to Netflix, but I do have Prime, and was determined to wrest some value out of it, since the videos are part of the annual fee. There’s some gold amidst the abundant dross on Prime, but you have to search for it, and cagey Amazon requires additional fees beyond what you’re already paying for a number of newer or “hot” movies. It’s all about money, really, and getting more of yours!

If you wait several months, most of those “rent” or “buy” movies will eventually be offered as part of the general Prime membership. They do offer some unique series like The Boys, about a group of flawed genetically and biochemically-engineered superheroes with moral and ethical impairments, and business and political commentary thrown in…

You're right...one really has to search Prime to find the good stuff. I just did another search this morning and added a couple of things to my watchlist. I like Karl Urban, but after seeing trailers of The Boys, then watching the first five minutes of it convinced me it's not a show I want to see. Meg Ryan, mother of one of the leads (Quaid) said she won't watch anymore of it because of the violence, some of it against her son's character. If I wasn't getting Prime free courtesy of my cell phone company (MetroPCS), I wouldn't have it.
