An Oprah Special on Weight Loss will air tonight on ABC

I didn't see it don't get ABC with an antenna but from what I read it's what I expected-A defacto infomercial.

That being said never a fan of drug intervention because if for no other reason what happens when one goes off the drug, any drug. Same for radical diets. There's rebound effect after one goes off a diet. Also unless medical issues in play weight loss is still fairly basic-burn more calories than take in. It's not going to happen like when we were younger but it still works.

Also seniors have other issues that contribute to weight besides fat and that's fluid retention. This is why water intake is so important-huh so the body can get rid of excess fluids/salt etc. This is another issue that comes back to some degree of fitness ie keep the heart in the best condition possible which also helps metabolism.

Dieting and fitness need to be worked on year round not every now and then. Less extreme and more simple/basic one can do daily can be just as effective.

Sorry but I have not read the comments to this thread, I am not a fan of Oprah, she lied about her weight loss, who does that? and then goes on television and talks about it. She is also a close friend of Harvey Weinstein, mmmm, have to think about that, and finally she went on national tv and begged for money for Hawaii when she is a billionaire, owns a lot of that land, she could well have afforded to help . She did help but to go on tv, no.

I used to love Oprah. I watched her as a young mother and felt she was real, funny (loved her and Gail together) and would be a great friend.
Somewhere along the line though, she crossed into the elite, out of touch, realm I think. Money and power.

Do you think she did? I've know a couple of people who did and they both seemed to have some form of GI trouble afterward. They did lose weight.
Yes she did.
The popular TV show host weighed 237 pounds at one time. With the help of gastric sleeve, she has shed most of her pounds and now weighs around 160 pounds and is looking fantastic. She is also a member of Weight Watchers.23 Dec 2023

gastric sleeve
I had to look this up :

Sleeve gastrectomy

Surgical weight-loss procedure involving reduction of stomach size
Sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure, typically performed laparoscopically, in which approximately 75 - 85% of the stomach is removed, along the greater curvature, which leaves a cylindrical, or "sleeve"-shaped stomach the size of a banana. Wikipedia

You could also lose weight by having gastric sleeve surgery like Oprah too.
I know a number of people who had that or similar surgeries. Every one regained the weight within five years. Every. Single. One.

Edited to add: They eventually stretch the area near where the surgery was, it turns into a de facto stomach, and the weight comes back because they're able to ingest large portions of food again.

Gaining Weight After Gastric Bypass What to Do
"Many people who undergo gastric bypass regain some or most of their weight lost back within 10 years. One recent long-term study showed that 93% of patients who received gastric bypass surgery maintained at least a 10 percent weight loss from their pre-surgery weight. Seventy percent maintained at least a 20 percent weight loss, and only 40 percent maintained at least a 30 percent weight loss after 12 years."

Very impressive. One friend had the surgery about 15 years ago and regained it all and then some. Others I know are less far on the timeline but have regained plenty. :(
My friend had tried many different things and all of them failed. She was very motivated by the time she decided to have the surgery. She wanted to be able to run and play with her grandkids. Now she’s 72 and doing well.

From the NIH site about all forms of dieting:
" Roughly 90 percent of people who lose a lot of weight eventually regain just about all of it."

When you gain weight you make new fat cells and they never go away, You can deplete and flatten them with dieting, but they're still there. Hungry. Saying, Feed me Della, feed me all night long!

Some sites list her among celebs who did and others say she denies it, but it's Oprah. How are you going to prove it one way or the other? I'm pretty sure she admitted having the surgery back during The Oprah Show days. Her weight has gone up and down over the years, she strikes me as someone who has a lot of options and will try all of them if necessary.

One thing I will say about her, no matter what anyone may think, she did have trauma in childhood and was certainly not born rich. She grew up apparently very poor. I wonder, if like many, her weight struggles are related to that.
