An orb weaving spider

Has a web outside of my office window. It took me a while to try to identify it since I couldn't get a good picture of it (this is as good as I've gotten so far). It's probably an inch long (or slightly less) and has short legs for its size. I have tentatively IDed it as a Neoscona crucifera. It scrunches up along the top of the window screen at night.

I am fascinated by orb weavers. I haven't seen one in my garden for a very long time. Years ago, in Summer, we would sit outside in the evening and watch them create their marvellous webs.

Each morning the web would be taken down and the spider would be somewhere nearby, all scrunched up and camouflaged to avoid being picked off by birds.

I walk on a path each day. There are trees on both sides. Everyday I have to be careful or I run into webs. If the sun is right I see marvelous creations. I feel bad about wrecking all their hard work.
