An outsider's view of the USA

His assessment of America is way over the top.
It's great that this international student sees the US in a positive light. But, IMO ..that light is coming through rose-colored glasses.
He attended Carnegie Mellon University, a private school for the wealthy, and then interned in Silicon Valley in California ... not your average American's life.
He apparently didn't study in school about the division of wealth in this country and how people really live here . .. 1% have it all, middle class is losing ground quickly, and the poorest people in this country don't have much opportunity to go to a Nordstroms or Bloomingdales and worry about being ignored.

Maybe some of his wealthy friends will read the glowing article and come over here and share with us. :)

Don't sell your countrymen short, Boo's Mum.
From where I stand there are many national characteristics of Americans to admire.
It sometimes takes an outsider to highlight them.

It also takes an outsider to point out the craziness too.
We have a book over here called "They're a Weird Mob" that points out some idiosyncrasies of Aussies.
Sometimes our best features are also our nuttiest ones.

I agree from where I am sitting, but I will say yes, I know some people who are living that American Dream, but most all are nowhere near the rosey picture this student writes about.
I could relate so many sad tales of The American Nightmare, but we all know the stories, jobs lost, houses lost, financial ruin, barely being able to feed your family.

This is not the same country I grew up in. Sorry for the mini rant, or not.

Overall I liked what he had to say, however jaded it may be from associating with only those with higher educations. But one thing for sure....smoking weed is NOT the same as smoking cigarettes! One is legal, however bad for you, and one is not! That may be how he perceives it with his associates, but it's simply not true.

Leave home for awhile and you'll be amazed at how wonderful it is to return...
