Another celebration ruined by a shooter

Today was a wonderful celebration of the KC Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. Nearly a million people had gathered for the event. I've been watching it all on TV today. Suddenly, around 2PM, as the celebration was ending, chaos erupted at the Union Station where the team members were just ending their participation. It looks like at least 10 people may have been shot, and the police have 2 shooters in custody.

Once again, it seems that we can't gather anywhere without some lunatics ruining it for everywhere.

8 to 10 people injured after shooting near Chiefs parade, official says

Probably a gang beef for looking at someone funny, People are so easily offended by what many would blow off in the past. A bunch of cupcake kids demanding respect 24/7. Respect is earned and if one doesn't get thier way they need to learn to move the frack on. Either ignore it or look at it as sticks and stones.

I should add RIP to the 2 that passed and speedy recovery to the surviors.

Also information is slow and conflicting on the suspects. One picture has a 30ish adult male and another shows 3 teenagers being carted off. Some are saying they wore red sweat suits with Chiefs attire underneath? It seems like a gang or youth dispute though but suspect information is slow in coming. What their motive or logic but is still not an excuse.

I'm just numb to this anymore, it's not that I don't care about the people killed and injured, nobody knows how to stop this and it happens over and over. I'm afraid to send anyone out for me in fear of their safety, I used to believe this was a safe place to live, but nowhere is safe. Dammit someone who can has to do something about this idiocy.

The US has created a society that has divided the privileged against the poor. The laws protect the privileged and keep the poor, disadvantaged. It is perfectly logical that some of those oppressed people will act violent and even kill. It happens in every country. Until these people are treated equally with those who are privileged you can count on people acting out their intense frustration on others.

From what I read, it might have been gang related, and at least 3 people were taken into custody by the police. There were apparently already FBI and military (National Guard ?) right where the shooting happened, because on the video you could see the soldiers in camo, and people were hollering that FBI was there; so they must have been expecting something like this to happen right when it did.

Here is a screenshot of some of the shooters that were arrested.

Being "poor, disadvantaged or oppressed" isn't a strong common denominator in the U.S. mass shooting epidemic, but having ready access to military style assault weapons is. Coupled with the mental health crisis, it is a recipe for non-stop mass murder.

If you take all the murders by guns in all the cities that aren't "Mass" shootings, and add them up. It is by far the underprivileged that have gun violence. Mass murder has a spectacular dynamic to it that is defined separately from the run of mill shootings occurring about every second of the day somewhere.

A gang beef shooting wouldn't be a surprise. They frequently are the ones who try to take out their targets at bars, parties. malls etc. They don't care about collateral damage they just know their target is there and will take them out regardless.

Damned shame! What should have been a day of happy remembrance for the team will forever be a day they remember as tragic! What is disconcerting is that this happened despite the heavy police presence. @Happyflowerlady, its normal for there to be such a presence whenever very large crowds are expected, such as New Years even in Times Square. I would be surprised if I found out this is gang related, but time and the investigation will tell.

It's being reported here that there was a "disagreement" that led to the shooting.

Which at least means it wasn't planned (talk about small mercies).

To be honest though, this is American Society circa 2024. We know all the arguments, we know all the reasoning on both sides. Our actions, or lack thereof, allows this to happen anywhere, at any time. As a non-American, I just want to talk all of you into a room and tell you that you have the greatest nation of Earth, but you've got to continue to work at it. Support those who bring you together, reject those who divide.

I wouldn't doubt but what it was an attempt to gain "rep" for
some gang business....it is not that unusual...kansas city at one
time had a good handle on gang probs till a couple busy bodies got in the way several years back, and that good
relationship went all to hell.....

The solution is obvious but unpalatable.

I've been very impressed, these last few days, with Kansas City's mayor, Quintan Lucas. He has emphasized that they had 800 police at the celebration, but when shooters are armed with powerful guns they can kill 20 people in seconds before the police even have time to react.

Perhaps he should first do some work in Missouri

More than 800 law enforcement officers were on duty at the time of the shooting, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas during the briefing.

In 2023, Kansas City Police Department's daily homicide analysis showed 182 homicides, 12 more than took place in 2022 and three more than the previous all-time high in the city, 179 homicides in 2020. KCPD's daily homicide analysis report indicates that a majority of the homicides reported in 2023 involved a firearm.

When asked about Kansas City's homicide rate in relation to Wednesday's mass shooting, the mayor called attention to the difference between daily crime and this public attack.

"I grew up in some of Kansas City's most challenged neighborhoods, usually if you were staying out of trouble, the trouble didn't come to you," Lucas said in an interview with KSHB after the shooting. "This is rather different, this is something where a bunch of people are at a parade. They're not buying or selling drugs, they're not subject to retaliation," he added.

Lucas, who was present at the Super Bowl parade, called the shooting, "an incredible disappointment."

In 2021, Missouri had the ninth-highest rate of gun deaths in the U.S., according to firearm mortality by state data from the Centers for Disease Control.

The midwestern state also has some of the laxest gun laws in any state in the US, according to Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which ranks Missouri as having the third-weakest gun laws.

Missouri began allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons in 2003, requiring training and a permit issued by the county sheriff, however, in 2007, the law requiring a permit to buy a handgun was repealed, according to the Giffords Law Center. After the permit law was repealed, there was an estimated 47.3% increase in firearm homicide, according to research from the American Journal of Public Health.

No background check is required for Missouri residents to purchase a firearm and there is no ban on assault weapons, according to Missouri state law.

In Feb. 2023, Missouri's House voted against banning minors from openly carrying firearms without adult supervision in public. The proposal failed by a 104-39 vote.

"While it may be intuitive that a 14-year-old has no legitimate purpose, it doesn't actually mean that they're going to harm someone. We don't know that yet," Rep. Tony Lovasco said in response to the decision at the time, according to AP. "Generally speaking, we don't charge people with crimes because we think they're going to hurt someone."

In 2021, Missouri established the "Second Amendment Preservation Act," which created additional protections for the right to bear arms and penalizes police for enforcing federal gun laws.

However, in 2023, Federal U.S. District Court Judge Brian Wimes ruled Missouri's law was unconstitutional, "invalid, null, void, and of no effect," according to his decision.

It was kids, one of them had an assault rifle, a kid isn't supposed to have shit like that, and why in the hell would they bring that to a mass rally without the itch to use it is beyond me. I'm laying the blame on poor parenting, and bad neighbors who didn't care, they probably just wanted them gone off the block and someone else's problem.

What prevents them from having "shit like that" ?

Common sense, parents, concerned caring people in their lives. There are laws about selling guns to minors, there are also unscrupulous people who don't care who will sell anything as long as there is cash handed over. The guns might have been stolen either from a parent or someone negligent with their storage. They can and probably will be traced back to their source, the original owner needs to be held accountable and charged with this crime as well.

I also saw on the news that it started because of a dispute. I notice they either blurred the face of one of the suspects or like in this photo, only showed his hands in cuffs. Perhaps because he's a juvenile (?)

You'll excuse me if I comment that that sounds a lot like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

That animal has bolted from the barn long ago shutting the door maybe the best we can hope for. This is America we've been in a race to the bottom since ronnie rayguns.

Mass shooting????
Are you discussing the responsible gun owners, who were standing their ground, and that ground just happened to be at a football celebration?
It's so strange that the only constant thing in mass killings is a weapon, and without that weapon, there's no mass killing.
