Another government program that is a disgrace!

I talked with a carpenter friend and he is sad that many young people can not read a tape measure!!
Try a youngin' with a non-digital micrometer , or vernier caliper ......... same thing.

But then, what's the point of progress, if we do not use it ? I mean @ one time the "cubit" & hand was the standard of measurement. [We] never learned that either.

Young people who aren't specifically schooled in how to read a tape measure (the learning curve for which is about 15 seconds) are probably sad that the older gent can't work any special features on his cellphone outside of the flashlight.

And the young people's kids will be way beyond them in 15 years. As RGP said, that's the way of progress.

I have no sympathy for this. If you can't afford a loan, don't get a loan.
If I read this correctly, you are saying that if you and your folks are poor and you need a loan, you should give up on the idea of attending college, state, community, or otherwise. In other words, return to the days when only the children of the wealthy should consider college. I guess that's OK if you're among the "haves"and not the "have nots".

What I'm saying is, if you don't have the means to fulfill the CONTRACT YOU SIGN to get a loan, then don't sign it. I've been poor, so don't try the sob-story on me. Community colleges are quite reasonable; anyone with enough gumption can get a job and attend one. Boo-hoo, no one wants to pay my way...ugh.

I totally agree about community and public colleges being the affordable way to go.

Many student loans are perceived as a financial windfall by naive kids, and 18-22 year olds are still kids despite being legally able to sign contract. In their youthful optimism most honestly believe they're going to graduate in 4 years, earn a huge salary, and pay those loans back lickety-split. That's why parents and other voices of reason need to counsel them about restraint and reality.
