It's been really hard for me to get past the shootings of these little children. There is/was no justification for it. Some people just do not care about life. Some believe that they are playing a video game and if they hit the
'reset' button, the game will start over. You can't convince them otherwise.
Another Trooper and myself took a man that shot and killed a woman in an art gallery near here. It was about a 3-hour drive from the county jail to the state prison. He was very quiet for about half the trip when he finally said that he had to use the rest room and could he have something to eat and drink. We already had pre-planned a rest stop on the way, but was still about 20 minutes away from that spot. He agreed to wait.
After we had rested and ate, the last half of the drive was him talking, talking, talking. He talked about everything from when he was born until that day. It was like he was living his life over again for a biography. His sentence was 'DEATH'. I finally said to him, "Kevin, you know that you have been talking for almost an hour and I never heard you say one word about the woman you killed. Do you feel any remorse at all?"
His words to me were a little haunting. He said, "You know, for some reason, I don't."
