Another possibility instead of Mars

They say the ocean covers about 2/3's of the world. So why aren't we doing more research concerning colonization of the great spaces all around us. If we can put a restaurant under the sea, why can't we expand on those concepts? We've already work out the oxygen problem. What do you think?

I can envision it now. We already polluted the earth's dry areas. Next up? The oceans..which are already polluted enough.
The oxygen problem has been solved? how so?

I think such an undertaking would be cost prohibitive. That's just the beginning. How do you keep a constant flow of oxygen in & pump carbon-dioxide out? What energy source do you use? Would it be so deeply submerged that the entire thing would have to be pressurized?

Now lets talk lighting. It would be dark down there. So now there's an even greater need for energy to light up the joint. I bet it's cold down there at the ocean bottom. Now there's a need for heating it. That's more energy. What do we do? Run a million foot extension cord and plug it in? I don't think so. I suppose inhabitants could grow some vegetables under the artificial light. But what do they do for protein? Slip outside the bubble to catch a few fish floating by? How do they get fresh water? Would they need to have machinery installed to convert sea water to fresh, filtered drinking water? What power runs that equipment? With our present technology and shortages of energy sources plus the amount of money this thing would cost to build... it just doesn't make any sense to even consider it. What would the rent be to live in an apartment built within a community living under the ocean?

Lois & Kaya, All of those problems still apply whether it's on this planet or a new one far far away. Where is the water or air going to come from UP THERE? We would be lucky to even find one resource, much less all that we would need to survive out WHERE?
As far as pollution goes, if we can't figure out how to take care of this world, why would we be any different on another planet. I would hate to believe that we think this world is disposable.
I do believe in the future generations abilities to eventually figure the up or down problems out.

I can see what you are saying, Ina, and it seems to make sense to me as well. Sure, it would take a lot of work, and modifying things to work under the ocean; but like you are saying, it is sure a lot closer than Mars, or even the moon. We already have underwater restaurants, and there is a luxury resort that is being built that would be livable in the not too distant future; so the technology is there to develop underwater living.
If they started from the shore, then they could actually just build out, and a person could commute from underwater housing to above ground work.
There are other possibilities for living right here on earth, too. We have a lot of uninhabited areas that could be developed. I remember reading that there are large underground rivers under the Sahara, and with some work, it could be irrigated, and turned into a livable area. The Bible even says the desert shall be made to blossom as a rose; so that kind of implies the possibility that we might develop the deserts at some point.
Even if they had to put environmental bubble-domes over the top to conserve water, it would still be cheaper and easier to do it here on this planet than to either transport something elsewhere, or try to make it there.
Another possibility that is already being utilized is underground cities. The government is said to have extensive underground facilities. Just how much of that is true, I don't know, but the information is all over the internet, and I believe that at least some of it is actually real.

I'm with you HappyFlowerlady, If we can't clean up the nest the creator gave us, what right do we have taking our our bad habits to another world? And I think your right about the many ways we can utilize to take care of our needs while we figure the "Up There" problems. We just need to reconfigure our thinking to come up with ways to save this world. :tapfoot:

I think the problem is that we're reproducing much faster than we're learning to utilize resources. It's sort of like starting 12 campfires when you know you only have enough fuel for 11 - it's just nonsensical - yet that is essentially what we're doing.

So instead of thinking about ways to limit the population explosion and learn to make do with what we have, what do we do? Typical humans - we continue to exploit the earth and now we look for new places to despoil.

I'm thinking that with the advancement of things like this new substance called "graphene", which will in turn enable the mass production of these ultra strong & flexible carbon nanotubes, the future solution of the problem of overpopulation might lie above us in the sky, rather than beneath the ocean.

They're already talking about the possibility of using these carbon nanotubes to create elevators to outer space.

If nothing else, it would be a great way to get rid of our trash!!!! Just point it at the sun & wave goodbye.

And maybe we'll also have floating man made "islands" on the surface of the ocean.

Floating cities, each with it's own water desalination facilities.

And of course, floating farms, adjacent to them.

Wouldn't want to be there during a hurricane or a typhoon though.

Maybe they'll be able to overcome that problem though.

we know more about the backside of the moon than our Oceans. so far only scientists liive down there

I think I need a brain transplant to even think up an answer:)
