Another thought. If a hundred thousand people die of the virus, what do we do with the surviving children?

Normally when parents die, children are placed in foster care-a system already overload and underfunded. Imagine over a 100,000 to 200,000 children suddenly parentless.

What do we do?

This isn't an AIDS or Ebola type virus that wipes out families. Most who die from COVID-19 do not have dependent children.

I agree with @StarSong. A few younger people, or middle aged people have died, but so far not two parents of children. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

In other countries, I agree. But in the US we are seeing a great many thirty-fifth year olds that are very sick and needing vents. Thus the many public service announcements directed towards that age group.

Actually, many parents of young children are in the 50-65 age range as the trend became to have children at a much later date. In addition, many children of parents that lost custody of their children live with their grandparents. I think my concern is valid if the deaths reach the expected levels.

Who cares for the children of the sick parents-foster parents/grandparents.

I didn’t present this as a fact, just a thought for consideration. Besides information on any children would be kept private so we won‘t/don’t know.

The nurse who had cancer had four children. I believe she was a single mother. I think there is a go fund me page for her children. Not saying you are wrong, can not trust my memory, but I think this is true.

I'm not suggesting it won't ever happen that both parents of dependent children will die from this virus, just that it isn't likely to happen in overwhelming numbers.
I have no ideal. I have trouble believing that a 100,000 to a million people will die in the US. But I wish I knew more of the circumstances of the older people who have died. People in nursing homes, people in multi generational homes are more prone to catching it.

This might be why the Chinese numbers of older people deaths could be wrong. As many of them live in multi generational homes, which would cause more exposure to the virus, and, therefore, cause more death in elders.

Of the Corona patients here in Tennessee, there are :
18.....age 0 - 10
96.....age 11 - 20
463.....age 21 - 30
286.....age 31 - 40
299.....age 41 - 50
280.....age 51 - 60
212.....age 61 - 70
120.....age 71 - 80
50......age 80+

There have been 13 fatalities and 158 hospitalized

Data as of Monday (March 30), Tennessee has 1,834 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Tennessee Department of Health. That's about the same number of cases as Indiana has, and in the top 15 on the list of states with the most U.S. coronavirus cases.

I've found no news stories out of my state about kids having been left orphaned by the virus. For comparison, several kids were left orphaned by the recent tornado here in Nashville.

The concentration seems to be in the younger age groups. Which is what is being seen elsewhere, so the Chinese have either not been truthful or it effects us differently. I don’t think we will hear much about children until it’s over.

Sorry to hear about so many children being orphaned, so few children are adopted. It is a national shame, and I don’t understand why this happens. My J, my last adopted child is my favorite, lol. The other have “equal” standing. But then J is favored by us all.

Domestic violence calls have increased here-some of those children will end up in care. I recall when several children were returned to their parents in LDS communities because this state could not afford to send them to foster care.

I wonder if the fact that older folk seem to be taking this more seriously is what's keeping the numbers down for seniors.

I think the mortality rate among seniors is higher than the mortality rate for younger folk, even though fewer seniors are catching the virus.

On CNN today it was repeated that a 100000 to 200000 would die in the next two to three weeks. So hard to believe those numbers, and too sad to imagine. How will we bury so great a number? How will families afford it?

I hope some parkland will be taken and a national burial spot be created If this comes to pass. All the victims, whose family agree, can be buried for free. I suppose cremation would be the best way possible. We must never forget this, we must always be prepared from this time forward.

Aneeda, most people in that younger demographic seem to survive the illness, though I'm sure it's no picnic. I think your concern is kind, but misplaced. Not too many 80-year-olds leave young children behind.

Although... some of the elderly might be caregivers of young children while the kids' parents are at work. I wonder what will happen in those circumstances, if the elderly grandparents don't survive the illness?

I have friends in their 50’s who have children as young as 5. My daughter, who basically has custody of her granddaughter, who is 2, is in her late 40’s. CNN gives the death totals but does not give a breakdown of the ages of those that died. We just don’t know.

My husband and I did foster care for about 30 years and we have two adopted disabled children, so yes, I am very concerned about children. My mother is 95. I think anyone over 70 should refuse a vent and anyone over 60 should think really hard before accepting one.

I forget what state or city, but in one place cancer patients have been “rated” and those at a level 6 have had their treatments suspended. The hard choices are coming for everyone if the projections are true. We need to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

Since my granddaughter works at a grocery store, I’ve asked my daughter if she would take their two kids if it became necessary. While she said she couldn’t answer now, I know she would. Everyone who has small children in their families needs to make ”just in case plans”. IMO.

@Aneeda72: "I forget what state or city, but in one place cancer patients have been “rated” and those at a level 6 have had their treatments suspended."

Nope. Giving information like that, which I could not find anywhere, BTW, without a link to it's source is very irresponsible. It's very possible this is under discussion, but to say it has already been implemented without being sure is hysteria talk. Unless you can document this, get a grip. Thank you.

Was reported on CNN. The reason given was to not expose the sickest cancer patients to the virus.

Just for you Pepper

I did research which took me about two minutes so I feel you probably didn’t look everywhere. But whatever.

Daily Mail.com. “Patients who have less than a year to live .. . . . . . . Have been put on the end of the list.” You can read the full article, pretty much says what CNN said. Elective cancer surgeries have been cancelled, in other words, cancers that can wait.

Terminal patients are at the end of the list for treatment and decisions are being made on who continues with chemo.

Oh, what would you like me to grip?

@Aneeda72 I understand your point to a certain degree as anyone over 70 should refuse a vent and anyone over 60 should think hard before accepting one. There are healthy 70 and 60 year olds..some are still working and have a good chance of recovery. You have people in younger age brackets that my get a vent but due to underlying health conditions the vent may not help either way. However, if a 70 or 60 year old have underlying health issues and a vent will not help, I agree with your post.

My Granddaughter is a Nurse....they finally let her skip a day to take a rest....She was going to the dialysis center every day...
They finally had to have the Nurse"s to take a break... She always wanted to be a nurse since childhood....Now this is the worse

The people come in every other day for dialysis Center...They need to breath....She has seen Death already.....(Sorry)….
But the Nurse's are not putting anyone the back of the list....(I wouldn't believe CNN …..)
So Be It!!!!!

that's it for the day....I don't want to fight with anyone in this time we are trying to stay SANE...…..

So say what you want.....I Did....And it's a free country....Hope it stay's that way....

Be Well, everyone....This too shall pass...… And I'm not afraid for me, I'm only afraid for my family. I lived a long time...
But I want my family to live to have there kids live to have the family well.....

Goodby for know.....Watch what you say, it will come back to haunt you.....

Chris Cuomo of CNN has the virus. I really like him, and hope he recovers.

Not to sound too clinical about this, but about 2.8 million people die in the US each year. An increase of 200,000 would be about 7 percent. And it willl be less than that because a) fewer people will die in gunfights and traffic accidents; b) some of those 200,000 would die within the year without COVID-19; and c) 200,000 is an outside estimate.

We can be better prepared for something like this, but France, Spain, and Italy all have national health systems and haven't done too well either.

CNN states:
Your search for cancer patients have been “rated” and those at a level 6 have had their treatments suspended. did not match any documents.

Your search for in what city or state have cancer patients been triaged in favor of coronavirus patients did not match any documents.

Your search for Where have cancer treatment suspended so not to expose the sickest cancer patients to the virus. did not match any documents.

How many ways should I ask CNN's search engine? I used YOUR words from your post that I answered to. So, a CNN link, please? Not Daily Mail. Any Brit here can tell you that source is sensational and not reliable. So, a CNN link, please? Not a tabloid link.
