Another Typical Chicago Weekend

On Sunday in Chicago and following the Puerto Rican parade, a young father lost his life to gang violence. From the report that I read earlier this morning at the state police barracks, his wife, who was driving, must have struck a parked car. The young man got out of the car to inspect the damage and after that, all hell broke loose. Read the story for yourself, but I warn you that some of the content is graphic in nature and may be upsetting to you. This is the world that some of us live in.

Chicago Killing

Just another day in Chicago it seems anymore, plus a lot of other major cities in the US as well.

That's terrible. We live 100 miles from New York City and would sight see once in awhile. I wouldn't chance it these days. That's not to say it couldn't happen in our own small town.
It's a risk wherever you go but you can't live in a bubble either.

There were times when I would layover in Chicago early in the day that after I checked into the hotel, I would go downtown and get on Michigan Avenue and walk up and down the street enjoying watching all of the shoppers. I remember buying my little girl at the time a really nice baby doll at the toy store FAO Schwarz. That place really amused me with the trains and what not. I would sometimes eat at Harry Caray's restaurant the "Holy Cow." Go to Michael Jordan's restaurant on Ohio Avenue, is that right? A lot of memorable moments in Chicago. Not anymore. No, thanks.

My wife and I were in Chicago a few years ago on an "L" train. At a stop, some young people pushed their way onto the train and into us. I heard one of them say that it was too crowded and "Let's try another car." A few minutes later, my wife realized that her purse was open and her wallet was gone. Luckily, we were on our way back home and didn't have much cash left, so it was more of a learning experience than a serious event, but it was still a pain in the butt. It could have been a lot worse had it happened when we first got there.

We learned to keep our money and credit cards in a money belt.

Those kids definitely knew what they were doing. And I know exactly what the woman who did it looks like. She was around 20 years old, petite, barely over 5' tall, around 100lbs, African American. There were maybe two or three people with her, all around the same age.

What's needed are more police. With that much crime, there should be police wherever you look. Build police stations right in the middle of the crime ridden areas.

When was the last time you saw Orientals demonstrating?
I assume most of us had no knowledge of violence on Asians until last year.

Historically, they've been oft mention as an example of law-abiding folk.
We can't have that, we need to provide incidents of violence against these folk- until they become like the rest of America.

I have been reading about these incidents for a few months now. I can't say that I have ever encountered anyone doing things like I had been reading and hearing about. Maybe most of these incidents are occurring in the bigger cities.

I went to Chicago a half dozen times, back in the '70's and '80's, to attend various company schools...usually for about a week at a time., Even back then, crime was a problem, and we were warned to stay away from various parts of the city at night,

About the Only positive memory I have of that city is their Deep Dish Pizza....some of the best I've ever had.
