Have any of you had a colonoscopy because your fecal occult (poop test) test turned out to have (invisible to the eye) blood in it... and it turned out all was well? I'd appreciate hearing from any of you about your experiences. Thanks!

I haven't but hubby had such a test after his brother died of gut cancer. The occult blood test is designed to produce false positives rather than false negatives, so that a positive test is merely an indication that further investigation should be carried out. The colonoscopy will examine the lining of the bowel and the result may be that all is well, or there may be benign reasons for the trace blood, or there may be early and treatable signs of tumours.

Hubby has a routine endoscopy and colonoscopy every five years for the past 35 years because of a family history of various forms of gut cancer. He has been cleared every time.

My Philly did, endoscopy also. Findings normal.

I had my first and only so far colonoscopy done six years ago, at age 61, after my M.D. suggested I have it done. Not because of the results of a stool test but mainly because I was older, had left home young and therefore I don't know any of my family's past medical history.

While I was under the doc found and removed three polyps and because he did he suggested that I have the procedure done every five years from now on as opposed to every ten if he would have found nothing.

I'm about a year overdue for having another colonoscopy but last year I had several other medical and dental issues that required surgery and although they were warranted I was just plum fed up with people messing with me so I put it on the back burner......I do plan on getting it done this year.

The actual colonoscopy itself is a piece of cake, there is absolutely no pain whatsoever during or after the procedure......although I will admit that the day before fasting and 'clean out' at home isn't a lot of fun.

Like all medical procedures there are risks......highly unlikely percentage wise but perforation of the colon or rectum wall is possible.
