Any other Yoopers on SF?

I realize that the UP of Michigan is sparsely populated (around 300,000), but surely there are native Yoopers besides me who are on SF. By sparsely, I mean fewer than 20 people per square mile. Really. That's sparse.

Hello? Are y'all out there?

Michiganders (and Michigeese) say that there are Yoopers, like me, and Trolls. Trolls live "under the bridge.";)

So far it looks like I'm the only Yooper, unless the "ignored member" is one. I doubt that very much.

Well now ya know that ten minutes ago, I hadn't a clue whether I was a Yooper or not. So... I did some investigating and now I know I'm not. :giggle:

Nope. Born and raised in the LP. When I was younger there was a movement among Yoopers to become a separate state called Superior. For many reasons, primarily economic, it never got any traction.

300, 000 in the UP of Michigan ...good luck with that...:D

A little factoid here:

The U.P. of Michigan (above the Straits of Mackinac, was once considered part of what was to become the Wisconsin territory (Wisconsin wasn't even a "territory" yet, just "up there somewhere"). At the same time, a strip of what is now Ohio running along the top of the state and allowing access to Lake Erie belonged to the Michigan territory (or at least the Michiganders thought so......the Buckeyes were of another opinion.....)

To make a long story short and one hell of a lot simpler, that part of the disputed Michigan-Ohio land was given to Ohio (makes sense when you look at the map). To make up for it, the U.P., such as it was, was taken away from the future Cheese Heads and given to Michigan territory as a sort of "consolation prize". Michigan Territory wasn't impressed but, y'know, the guv'mint giveth and it taketh away and whadda ya gonna do?

And that, folks, is why the Michigan-Ohio State football game is always going to be a doozy......

I did some house hunting in and around Ontonagon thinking I'd retire there. Then 2008 came along and decimated those small towns.

@dilettante As we used to say in the UP, "Yabbut..."

We were very, very lucky and sold our house just before the bottom fell out of the housing market. It was sold at just $900 under list almost before the ink was dry on the listing agreement. Two months later, it was appraised at $20K less.

Recovery up there has never quite happened. The house is still not valued at what we sold it for.

Don't think this counts...but
My S-I-L's Mom was from Niles
And had that Midwestern speech

I remember seeing some odd things on our U.P. vacations.

Way up there one day, I trotted into a combination gas station/bar/restaurant/gun shop/gift emporium/grocery store (and I'm pretty sure there was a barber shop and post office in there somewhere) to get a Coke and was greeted by a couple of somewhat-friendly wolves.

Now, I'm sure there was somewhere between 10-25% German Shepard in their gene pool (because, even then, you couldn't have a domestic animal that was more than 90% wolf) but they LOOKED like wolves and they were BIG and they had BIG teeth, Grandma, and I sure as hell wasn't gonna get down and
do some wrasslin' with them.
