A little factoid here:
The U.P. of Michigan (above the Straits of Mackinac, was once considered part of what was to become the Wisconsin territory (Wisconsin wasn't even a "territory" yet, just "up there somewhere"). At the same time, a strip of what is now Ohio running along the top of the state and allowing access to Lake Erie belonged to the Michigan territory (or at least the Michiganders thought so......the Buckeyes were of another opinion.....)
To make a long story short and one hell of a lot simpler, that part of the disputed Michigan-Ohio land was given to Ohio (makes sense when you look at the map). To make up for it, the U.P., such as it was, was taken away from the future Cheese Heads and given to Michigan territory as a sort of "consolation prize". Michigan Territory wasn't impressed but, y'know, the guv'mint giveth and it taketh away and whadda ya gonna do?
And that, folks, is why the Michigan-Ohio State football game is always going to be a doozy......
