Putin is seeing spies everywhere

One of Russia's leading scientists has died less than two days after he was dragged out of a cancer bed and locked up on charges of high treason.

Dr Dmitry Kolker, 54, was flown across Russia from Novosibirsk, where he taught quantum physics and maths, to Moscow's notorious Lefortovo Prison on Friday.

After 48 hours, the leading laser scientist died, his family announced today.

He was under the watch of state security service the FSB, once led by Vladimir Putin.

Dr Kolker's family accused the FSB of 'torture' and abusing the doctor's human rights by pulling him out of his death bed. He had stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

The FSB claimed it had medical authorisation to unplug him from his hospital drip and lock him up as part of a major spy probe.

The scientist was accused of leading a pro-China spy ring alongside Professor Anatoly Maslov, 75, a hypersonic technologies teacher.

Maslov remains in Lefortovo, which became famous during Stalin's Great Purge of political opponents, businessmen and scientists.

I really doubt the validity of this war. It seems to me that this war is being extended intentionally, but what would be the motive. I don’t think anyone has any doubt that Russia could end this war at any moment.

I know we (the U.S.) is on the hook for billions if dollars for this war and we aren’t even physically involved in it. I use this example as to why we shouldn’t complain if the president decides to payoff student loans. If we are going to spend billions on a war we aren’t fighting, why shouldn’t we use some of that money to payoff student loans?

I mean.. what possible excuse could any dicatator have to pull out a terminally ill man from his bed on a trumped up charge ..the man was 2 days from death, he must have been in a lot of pain, they marched him onto a plane and flew him across the country to put him in a notorious Russian Prison.. the poor guy must have thought he'd died already and entered Hell...

There are a few complex issues to think about. Treaties and trade agreements between the US, Europe, and Russia prevent US troop support, and also most parts of Europe depend on Russian gas and minerals exports, and now wheat, too, I think.

We are helping the way we can because, a) we were asked, b) to prevent a larger Russia, c) to protect a weaker democratic nation under attack by an authoritarian nation, which has (basically) been our promise to the democratic world since WWll.

If the US sent troops to fight alongside Ukraine and/or specific types of military arms and equipment, in addition to possible sanctions and other more severe punishments, there's the issue of inciting a nuclear conflict. Putin can be pushed that far, especially by the US. The entire world would despise the US if it were blamed for a nuclear war, and the US would be held responsible for major rebuilding, reparations, and compensations.

That only explains why the US has gotten involved but hasn't gone all-in to help end this thing asap. Why it began in the first place is being speculated. And I agree that it seems to be dragging out inexplicably, but imo, that's on Putin. I could be wrong, though. It's a complicated world.

The U.S. should not be considering sending troops to Ukraine. Russia would look at this as an escalation of the war and include the U.S. as the enemy. We really don't need to be logistically involved in another war at this time or at any other time in the near future.

A Russian journalist accused of posting 'sane people are for peace' about Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has been locked in a Siberian clinical psychiatric hospital.

Maria Ponomarenko, a 44-year-old mother of two, claims the authorities are seeking to gag her because of her opposition to the war.

She is accused of spreading 'fake' news concerning Putin’s 'special military operation' in Ukraine.

One comment seen as against the law by prosecutors said: 'It is impossible to remain silent, knowing about the death of thousands of innocent people.'

Her 'fake' Telegram posts also included critical comments about the Russian bombing of a drama theatre in Mariupol in April where hundreds of civilians were sheltering.

The Russian defence ministry denied its forces were behind the bombing, which it blamed on Ukrainian nationalists.

Because of her posts contradicting the official Russian narrative, she can face ten years in jail, or indefinite incarceration in a psychiatric facility.

Russia is recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine with the promise of almost £3,000 and their sentences being annulled if they come back alive after six months.

Inmates are being actively recruited in St Petersburg jails, according to independent media outlet IStories.

The convicts are told they will be put on the frontline to hunt down 'Nazis' in Ukraine in an arrangement that suggests they will be deployed as cannon fodder.

Private military company Wagner - seen as working hand in glove with Vladimir Putin’s armed forces and with close Kremlin links - is reported to be behind a recruitment drive at penal colonies number 7 ‘Yablonevka’, number 6 ‘Obukhovo’, and number 4 Fornosovo.

The FSB security service - once headed by Putin - is also reported to be involved.

At first the recruitment drive was only for those with previous military service but now it seems that it is open to all convicts, though not those serving 20 years or more for the most heinous crimes.

A source told IStories: 'About 200 people wanted to sign up, but in the end they registered about 40, and they were even tested on a lie detector.

'My loved one wanted to agree, but we, relatives, made a tantrum with threats.

'Now he swears that he will not go, but he definitely hesitates, because he sees this as an opportunity to earn money.

'He says: "If the worst happens, I will earn you the money for an apartment".'

A relative of a prisoner who was selected to fight with Wagner said: 'He was bribed with the promise that in six months he would return home and his criminal record would be wiped out.

'In addition, when six months have passed and those wanting to continue serving will be provided with a job.'
