We all remember the Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder duet Ebony and Ivory.
It reached number 1 on the Billboard 100 in 1982. It was ranked as the 4th biggest hit of 1982.
Fast forward to 2007.
BBC 6 Music listeners voted Ebony and Ivory as the worst duet in history.
In 2009, Blender magazine named it as the tenth worse song in history.

I love both artists but in my opinion the BBC 6 Music listeners and Blender magazine have a point.

The thing about the advent of MTV is, good or bad, in some cases, the look became bigger than the actual music.

Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of great music that was put out in the 80s, as with any generation. It progressed and evolved from drums and guitar music into a more sparse and electric, synthetic sound.

But, that's nothing new. Music has always embraced and experimented with the technology of the times.

There have always been music videos, too, but MTV embraced that aspect, focused on it and made it the centerpiece of the song.

And, let's face facts here, there were bands that put far more emphasis on their videos than their music. Hair metal jumps right to mind. VO-5, mascara, scarves, lipstick and rouge all took center stage, while 95% of the songs were formulaic, about partying and having a good time. Other than a couple of pretty good guitarists, that genre didn't contribute much to the evolution of music.

My daughter became a teen-ager in the 80's. A lot of 60's music was enjoying a revival, mostly being done by 80's groups.

I remember one day driving her and a friend to a party or dance and one of the 60's songs came on the radio. Her friend's mother was along for the ride and we started singing the song. The girls were outraged. "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT SONG? IT JUST CAME OUT!!!" Au contraire, my dears. This was out when WE were your age. It was always a shock to find out that the old moms might have had a hint of coolness in their day.

I am loving this thread!! It was started before I joined the forum, and I'm thrilled to see it got bumped. I was a teen during the 80s and have such fond memories (and sometimes embarrassing ones, when I think of the fashions—all that neon, big earrings, bigger shoulder pads, even bigger hair 😁). I think my friends and I destroyed our own little section of the ozone layer with all the Aqua Net hair spray we used.
