Are any of the companies you do business with passing along credit card fees?

I think I may have seen another thread on this in which someone mentioned gas stations were passing on credit card fees.

Anyway, I went to the salon that I've been going to for 15 years. I was talking with the owner. They had just implemented a new system and were having great difficulty with it. She explained that the credit card companies were now charging them 4% and the new system was put in place so they could pass it along to customers!

They've never raised the price for my haircut in all the time I've been going there so I'm fine with an additional 4%. She did say if I paid cash there would be no additional charges so that may be the way I pay in the future. I carry one $20 bill in my wallet for emergencies but I always pay with cards for the perks. Some merchants don't even take cash these days so this turnaround is surprising but then again it isn't for a small business owner.

BTW I asked her if possible tariffs were impacting them and she said only for beauty supplies. They are an Aveda store and that is all made in the US so no issues there.

Anyone else seeing this when dealing with your local merchant?

Yes, passing on the CC fees has been going on for some time. As you said, Doug, there's no fee for using cash or for using a debit card.

YES ….I bought one small item in ALDI …and as I didn’t have cash to pay …I was slugged a surtax for using my card ….
Then I looked for a ATM compatible with the bank we deal with , it showed our card logo …on machine
but I was slugged $4 for using it

We already pay a goods and services tax.in Aust ….now they are getting a double whammy of tax

And NO ….my card is not a credit card ….we don’t live on credit .

I haven't been charged a fee when I use my debit card. 🤔 I stopped using ATM's to withdraw cash ages ago. I can take out up to $100.00 at the grocery store with no withdraw fee. I don't use much cash anymore so that works for me when I need it.

I don't trust debit cards.

The barber shop that I go to does not take credit cards or checks, only cash green money. I always have to check my wallet before I go for a haircut.

@Bella with the decline of customers using cash in Australia , some shops are now charging a sur tax
as they claim they are being charged by the banks and refuse to absorb the tax ..so passing it on to the customer ….we already pay a goods and services tax on most services

Card surcharges

Copied this …

In Australia, card surcharges are a common practice, where businesses add a fee to the cost of a purchase when a customer uses a credit or debit card. These surcharges are legal in Australia, but they must not exceed the costs incurred by the business to accept that specific card type. While a ban on debit card surcharging is being considered, it's not yet in effect.

Went to the dentist the other day for a routine cleaning and when checking out the gal told me that they had started charging a card fee...didn't see much sense in complaining so I just said, "no problem, do what you gotta do".

That's a good question and maybe something I should pay more attention to. I haven't used my credit cards in months. I'm really going back to having more cash on hand.

Separate "Cash" and "Credit" prices for gasoline were common in the past although I don't recall seeing that lately. A few local businesses around here offer a discount for paying with cash.

Of course you all realize that any business that doesn't make that distinction is simply rolling their credit card fees into their basic pricing structure. If you pay with cash at such businesses, you're basically helping to offset other customer's credit card charges.

I've noticed that several restaurants have added a 4% surcharge for using a credit card. Some businesses already had that in place for years. So for small orders at these places, like a slice of pizza and drink, I pay cash. But if one of my cards is paying 5% at restaurants, I figure I'm ahead by 1% and will go ahead and charge it if the cost is more than $5 or $6.

I don't go to restaurants any more, but I did frequent my favorite Pizza joint for take out until the charged me a surtax. Haven't been back there for a year. I may go back. I don't know. Etsy on the internet surcharged me for buying a DVD from them. I will never go back to Etsy. I'd only been there that one time.

I suspect this may be a glimpse of the future. Will it help or hurt business? I don't know. My only concern is whether I will continue to do businesses that surcharge. I believe credit cards have been a boon to business, but they are now treating customers who use them like an annoyance.

"Credit card processing fees are currently legal in most states. When you use your credit card to pay for a purchase, the merchant may add a credit card surcharge or convenience fee to your total. They can also require that you spend a certain amount of money — called a minimum purchase — in order to use your card."

When I am told I must spend a certain amount I just go somewhere else.

A diner I go to for breakfast just started that. When I go for breakfast, it’s always a spur of the moment thing and I may not have cash, so I just don’t go.
I'm back to always having $50-$100 cash with me. It eliminates unnecessary fees and other charges. Sometimes the cash will sit in my wallet for days or weeks......fee free.

The bodegas all do. The Bagel store does. If not, some stores have limit, like you must buy $10. to use your card. I always thought this was illegal in NYState.
