Are People More "Thin Skinned" than Before?

It just seems so many people lately are just looking to fight about something ... anything.
Not sure why there is so much anger, but it is definitely out there.

I see that also....why??
Old, angry people who never grew up. Still sticking their tongues out at each other in the schoolyard; still making fools of themselves trying to get the last word, etc.

The best part for them is they can be insulting and rude without getting a punch in the nose.

it's beyond even slightly amusing these days. Once we'd have laughed it off, but now these permanently offended are becoming dangerous in many cases.. people are losing their job, because of them.. people are being arrested because of them..., it's got to the point now we daren't even joke with people outside of our own families in case they take offence and report us for something , it makes me so mad tbh...

What the heck happened to freedom of speech ? 😧
i think like placating a child ...... after seeing they could get what they want by throwing a fit they continue to do it.....
I really think they will grow more bitter as life is not fair and sometimes truth hurts.

When I was a boy at school, younger than my teens, one teacher,
a woman, said there will always be trouble in the world, until all
nations have integrated and inter married and all skins are the same
colour, but then it might be too much to hope for and it will take
many lifetimes to become so.

We never believed that then, but now I see that she might have been
correct.

Mike.

I wasn't super thrilled with what Whoopie Goldberg stated, but to be suspended, no way. Similar happened with Sharon Osbourne IMO.

Virtue signaling seems to be the thing today. Snap phrases that just make the person feel good for saying them. Yet in the end, they don't mean much.

Nope I don't believe that ..look at the Caste system in India and Pakistan .. they're all the same colour skin... doesn't stop them hating each other..I have friends who are Bulgarian.. they tell me even in Bulgaria which is a predominately white country.. colourism is alive and thriving, those whose skin are darker , despite being white...are looked down on and verbally and physically attacked at times by those with lighter skin.. being called pejorative Bulgarian names for Gypsy..

In our present time the world is in a new era. We are are all anxious about the present and future, and rightly so. We are not sure about what to do to get the world back together. So, we are arguing about everything to fix it, and rightly so. It is a mess. I do not foresee this changing anytime soon. What bothers me the most is what our descendants are inheriting.

anxiety/fear = fight or flight....take your pick.

Well said. This is why I am happy to have no kids.

Nah...I don't think people are more thin-skinned. There will always be someone who will take offense to a post and there will always be someone defending it. If you don't like the subject, ignore the post - arguing about it serves no one. The previous statement is just my personal opinion.
we're not talking about online..we're talking about out in the real world.....not that it doesn't happen online, of course it does, but this discussion is about people worldwide taking offence at every little thing..

I think publicly claiming to be offended is little more than a cry for attention. We can stand in our yard and scream "I'm offended" and it will only annoy the neighbors and get you the short-lived attention of a few. Shouting it on the Internet will get attention from a wider audience and might even get a bold headline, create your own little 15 minutes of fame.

Banning Whoopie for saying something stupid got much more attention for the network than a simply reprimand.

It's a hope for the future, as we evolve socially. A hope.

Free advertising. I just said this to my husband when he asked me if I’d heard about her comments, though I haven’t listened to the show in years.

How many will think about watching the show now. Same with Joe Rogan.

Sometimes I listen to Adam Corolla’s podcast. Though I don’t agree with much of what he says, I do with his opinion that the public shaming won’t end until the apologies stop.

IMO ........ it is all tied to the PC crowd. Political correctness is taking this country down the drain !
I agree. In my country there is a lot of political correctness. There are no written laws against it but it's understood. If you don't agree with what is being preached by the government regarding immigration, the all inclusive society, Covid19 vaccination, etc. you are made to feel like some sort of trouble maker. No, it's not Germany in 1940 nor Russia in 1949, no one will arrest you, but you will be made to feel that you are "behind the times." There is a lot of anger out there and I have no idea where this is going?

I know this for a fact and watched it play out with my own mother. Her behavior (borderline personality disorder) never emerged until she married my enabler stepfather when I was 7. Her behavior would never have been tolerated by my biodad. Not a great person.

I'm not sure how they will fair but they will do their best to surround themselves with people who will placate them. And it's a problem when unjust things happen because these people have taken too much attention.

just a suspension not banning her.... but point taken ... My guess is it is not that she offended Many people ...............but she may have offended Certain people.
Attention for network in this case was not the good attention they want but as they say in show biz... any attention is better then none.

I wish I understood what is happening and what/who is behind it all. This has not come about by chance, there is some purpose behind it.. It is surely weakening our society. All this business about mental health is part of it....people are being made to feel there is something wrong with them, when they are simply feeling normal emotions. What Joanna Lumley said is perfectly true.

My parents were born in the USA, and my grandparents were born in Italy. I can't count the times I was called Dego.Recently I was talking to a woman in the store. She didn't know I was Italian because I have light eyes and hair and skin. She said "God save us from the Dego's." She also told me she bought a phony vaccination card. I wanted to say "God save me from people like you." I didn't I just walked away.It didn't make sense to me to waste my time talking to an Idiot.

No, but in the old days if someone insulted you, it was likely in-person and within arms reach, which meant that the person could get punched in the mouth. Of course, nowadays you have to be careful who you tangle with in person, with so many crazies carrying guns.

People use the internet to get their aggression's out, and insult strangers 24/7, without worry of being punched in the mouth.

Keep in mind that just because some people are too easily offended, hell some seem to look for things to be offended by, does not mean that there aren't people who go too far, beyond basic human decency boundaries and they shouldn't be challenged to support and/or explain their statements. Whoopi does not fall into that category. But i can think of newspeople and politicians who do, as well as some folks i've crossed paths with on the internet.
