Are the world maps all wrong ??

I just watched this very interesting little video, describing the climate zones of the earth, and how they work. It also shows our universally accepted map of the whole world, and shows the discrepancies in how the sizes of the different countries are represented on all of our maps.

When the first world maps were made, they were distorted to show Europe as much larger than it actually is, and also showed all of the countries south of the equator much smaller than they actually are.
Amazingly, even with Google Earth, and much better mapping skills now, we are still using that same old version of what the world looks like, rather than one that is true to size.

This short video will have you very surprised, at least it did me, when I watched it, and compared the sizes of the countries and the actual land masses.

Interesting, but that's the way it is. Trying to display a sphere on a flat surface is problematic.

Most map users usually rely on a smaller version of the world map; just the local area where they are or where they're going.

Most maps are called "projections" because that's the process by which they're made. The part of the world is projected
onto a flat surface.
