A friend of mine is convinced that his iPhone is listening to him all the while and insists that if he talks about any particular item, next time he opens the phone adverts for that item will appear.

What do you think, is Big Brother listening?

well I have an iphone, and I don't get adverts for anything I've been talking about...
 
I am not sure about I-phones but in the case of any of the things like alexa / goggle nest etc YES. could be another App he has on the phone

i Do not understand why some people seem to enjoy that but i do not need people assuming they know my every thought and move.
 
I don't have a smart phone, BUT I use Youtube quite a bit and I don't have Google account. I did for awhile and they bombarded me with add related stuff I was interested in, so I closed my Google account. Lately on my recommended page I have been seeing videos that I searched for on Google that are not really what I follow, and now a video shows up about that search. I might just being "leary", but I am watching this trend close. People might not be getting the ads on their smart phones, but your data is being mined and put into a huge data storage companies.
 
Most technology includes some loss of privacy.
My car insurance company e-mails me, trying to sell me more coverage. Their e-mail includes my car's odometer reading - exactly to the mile. Something on the car lets them know.
 
do you have one of those things they try to get people to plug into car to " reward" safe driving ?
Because all that does is track you....
A neighbor signed up for pay by mile insurance not realizing that each time their backed up in driveway to put out their garbage can it added 6 miles to their bill.

My car came with a feature that "rates" my driving after I shut it off - for safety and fuel consumption.
Since it's a 2021, maybe it's a rather new feature.
I know newer cars have black boxes that record speed, braking, accelerating & steering at the time of an accident.
 
Win, I'm impressed that you have a '21. You are "movin' on up to the East Side"! Did you sell your Accord? I've been holding onto my '17 A4 forever.

I will never let my car insurance company monitor my speed/braking because my premiums will surely go up! ;)

Me neither, there again, in the eleven years that I have had my I-phone I have never worked out how to use it for anything but speech & text. And getting that far took me about three months. Oh, correction, three years in I discovered a flashlight torch. But anything internet related, just went over my head years ago.

Not just iPhones but Androids, listening all the time, same with Amazon's Alex appliances. Coming soon: phones will be watching you, via the front camera, watching your facial features. komando.com

I got the '21 Accord Hybrid last year when they first came out.
 
I've had the same experience. Have a conversation about something and then targeted ads come my way if it relates at all to a product. Creepy to say the least.

I dunno about iPhones, but according to the Birds Arenā€™t Real movement, our feathered friends are listening as they are surveillance dronesā€¦ šŸ¤Ŗ

Iā€™ve got a 2021 Hyundai Kona Ultimate that if checked monitors my driving habits and grades my safety performance. Needless to say, I turned off data collecting so Hyundai doesnā€™t keep tabs on my driving and where I drive. My driving score was low because I donā€™t drive according to the rules.
 
What scared me was the realization that my devices are communicating with their own component parts. My TV screen warns me when the batteries in the remote are getting low! So you see, theyā€™re becoming self-aware! Perhaps my next warning will be, ā€œReplace the remote batteriesā€¦or else!ā€ I think that they all work for an evil mastermind called General Electricā€¦ šŸ¤”
