Are Westerners becoming too smug?

The recent glib remarks made on the Ramadi thread after literally taking my comment about the "Hun" being at the door made me realize just how complacent we are because ISIS can't physically invade us. However, internal terrorists are not to be sneezed at along with the possibility of another 9/11...

It's kind of ironic, I go to an old fashioned barber shop where the older gents gather and solve all the world's problems everyday. The barber is older than me and would like to retire, but he said he would miss the rhetoric that goes on there daily. Anyway, I remember several years ago when one of the older gents made a comment that no country would ever invade the U.S. He said something like, "With each household now having 2.8 guns, a country would have to be plain stupid to invade us." I am sure that he was dead when 9/11 happened, as he was probably 80 back around 1985 when he made that remark, but I often wondered what he would have thought about that attack. A country can invade another country in more ways than one. We found that out. I think 9/11 was a lesson in humility for all of us here in the U.S.

My thinking is that terrorists only win when we become terrified of them.

When we realise that we are stronger than they are, more resilient and able to rise above any damage that they can inflict on us, when we are united in our resolve not to yield to their demands, then we cannot lose to a group like ISIS. In the end, they will be a spent force and western democracies will still exist long after they are just a closed chapter in the history books.

Well, our reaction, unfortunately, led to the destabilization of the ME, we should have just stuck to Afghanistan. I have always thought that W wanted to show his father how to do it. Maybe why perhaps sons shouldn't follow fathers into the presidency...

Ok... guess this thread was aimed at me and my comments about being invaded.. What I was referring to was a traditional warfare invasion.. troops storming the borders of the USA and Canada.. do YOU envision ISIS doing that? I believe I also reiterated over and over the need for intelligence and surveillance to thwart any terrorist event.. such as 911. It's also true that intelligence WARNED the Bush administration of a huge attack being eminent prior to 911, and nothing was done about it. NO.. We are not being too smug.. we are being realistic. If you see ISIS marching down Pennsylvania Ave anytime in the future.. I'd like some of your mushrooms.

Well, maybe they have learned their lesson. But the thought of a previous president's wife does not bode well either...

She is just as bad, an ersatz liberal in the pocket of Wall Street...

But Bernie is up to 34% in the polls! If he could just come a little in from where the busses don't run he could have a chance...

Judging from your comments, it appears to me that you didn't listen to Clinton's speech this weekend. Did you? Also, remember, Clinton and Sanders will have to debate several times in the primary. Then Sanders message will get more exposure and the contrast between him and Clinton (if any) will be showcased.

Yes, Clinton is being dragged further to the left to cover her flank...

Which is why I am glad Bernie got into the race. I'm sensing a tone of populism in this country that I didn't before. The last 8 years... the Citizen's United Ruling.. the attention being paid to income inequality. The acceptance of marriage equality by the majority of Americans.. I see a populist movement in the making. Politicians need to be very wary of it.. Just look at the backlash the TPP has had. People calling their congressmen in huge numbers.. and they are listening. To not listen will make it pretty hard to face their constituents next year. I think the top 1% has pushed about as far as it can.

Right now, Hillary will still be better for the US than our current way far left, never look at the money issues, Obama. A move more toward center that we really do need.

Hillary will come to the center once she has stabilized her flank. Bill will be her tutor on how to play the field...
