Are You Afraid to Fly?

It’s not my favourite way to spend time. It did take me several flights before I could learn to relax.

For me it’s much preferable to driving if the destination is more than two days away. I’m a stressed out driver/passenger too so I might as well get there as quickly as possible.

Now by the time I arrive early at the airport and wait in the airports, I’m just ready to be on that plane and get to my destination, no more fears.

I haven’t flown since late 2019. The flight might feel much longer while wearing a mask anytime I’m in the airport or plane.

Starting in November, all passengers in Canada must be double-vaxxed. I’m thinking about flying east to see my family.

I haven’t been in a plane since I stopped working in 2005.

Flying used to be a routine part of my job.

I found it to be tedious and annoying but I was never afraid.

I preferred to drive when I could. Driving allowed me to take more things with me that made life seem a little more normal while away from home.

I have not flown since I got out of the military 42 years ago. To many bad memories for me for I was a Crew Chief / Door Gunner on the Huey helicopters in the Vietnam war flying on combat missions. To many close crashes with the helicopters and I am afraid that if I fly again my number will be up and I will crash and burn.

I used to love the experience of flying! Back when people dressed up to go places, and were courteous. I last flew in 2014. Haha, getting over too many joint replacements etc. since then. I would go again if I could get a little more mobility back. But the actual physical experience, & sensations, backing away from the gate taxiing, that revving before starting the takeoff run, the moment of becoming airborne, I love it!
Until the turkey in front of me flops his seat back into my lap.
Love bulkhead or exit seat. I

I used to be afraid of flying, very anxious with pictures of airplane crashes floating in my head, but I did it anyway. But that fear disappeared completely. It happened when I took my kids to visit my father. I had to pretend that I was enjoying the plane ride and everything associated with it. I was a regular Mrs. Cheerful. Anyway, somehow that did the trick and I enjoyed the flight home. Since then I have enjoyed flying.

My wife and I have crossed the pond many times, it's a long flight yet I have never seen the toilet on an aircraft. We get to our seats, I sit by the window so that I don't have to move to let someone else leave their seat, I buckle my seat belt and there I stay, doing my best not to be incontinent. All meals, hot drinks, alcohol and duty free sales are politely refused, but I do sip water at my wife's request so that I don't dehydrate, not too much mind, I might need to pee and that would never do. How I hate the whole experience.

A few decades ago we were in Melbourne and our next stop was to be Sydney. We thought about it and decided we would see more of the countryside if we went by train. I have never seen so many sheep in my life. We did enjoy the trip and the other passengers were friendly. The aboriginal names of some of the towns along the way were quite different. It was a pleasant trip.
After Sydney we flew to Cairns and it was "just flying". We enjoyed Cairns when we got there.

Not afraid to fly, but do not like landings. Some can be really scary in some parts of the world.
Have you ever been Island hopping in the Caribbean? St. Maartens has just about the scariest airport. We spent a day on the Island, arriving and leaving, by cruise ship. I don't think that my bowel could cope with a landing at St Marteens.

I'm not afraid to fly...I've done it 6 times, but I've been on a personal boycott of the airlines for a couple of decades. The last time I went to Florida (from Jersey), I took Amtrak. I had plenty of legroom, could get up and walk around and check out the scenery as we went along. I really enjoyed it. I had a great seat mate. We took a picture together and I swear we look like we could be sisters. On the way back, I met a nice couple who sat across from me. The husband was crazy (fun) but showed his deep side when we talked about his time in service. I used to think not flying meant I couldn't check out the islands...but I took a family reunion cruise to Bermuda in 2019. I hope I never have to fly again.
