Are you an ex-smoker?

I smoked for 20 years. Was up to 5 packs of Tareyton 100s when I quit.Actually,no,the last year I switched to Barclays because they were supposed to be "better" for you. But because they were "lighter"-and not 100s,I smoked an extra pack a day.Quit cold turkey on Nov.17th,1988 due to something Yul Brynner said about his biggest regret in life, and I never picked up another cig.Hubby quit 2 days later, when he realized I was serious, and he never went back.

I stopped smoking about 20 years ago. And every once in a while, I get the urge to smoke. Most of the time, I'm ok with not smoking. There's an episode of "Frasier" where his agent has to stop smoking. But she tells in great detail why she loves to smoke. Gotta tell you if I had a pack near me during that show, I would have lit up. Watching someone inhale a smoke.......... And if I only had one month to live, I'd buy a carton. Are you an ex-smoker? Do you still get urges?

Quit 37 years ago but xrays reveal there is damage. Why wouldn't there be. That's why now 2nd hand smoke is to be avoided. Good luck!!

Wow, that's some heavy smoking, 5 packs! Glad you quit!

Smoked for about 5 years. Quit at 25. No urge now to smoke. In fact, seeing the people at work running outside to smoke is a big enough turn off. One day I was working across from the conference room and when the morning meeting was over, several couldn't run out that back door fast enough to go have a cigarette.

Never started. Watched my mom, a smoker, battle bladder cancer and die at 66. OK>..edit to say I did try once as a teen, and was not impressed by the taste and smell.
When I owned my house it was a smoke free home
I've very sorry Marie. Bladder cancer is one of the cancers heavily associated with smoking.

Is smoking allowed at your complex? My complex is supposed to be smoke free. New owners for about 1 1/2 years and I'm not sure if they are still stating that. I think the guy downstairs is smoking something when he gets home from work and the people who got evicted under the previous owners, that also lived below me, smoked sometimes. I do still see some people smoking out on the sidewalk off the complex grounds so I'm not sure about the policy and don't want to ask.

Smoking area out back of the building. Smokers must be 20 feet from door. No pot smoking allowed, even though legal in the state. It is because we are subsidized housing.

What a great story. Five packs!

I remember the Yul Brynner ads-- what a great guy he was to do that for others as he was dying. His story influenced me, too, plus a promise I made to my son, but it was still the hardest thing I ever did. I quit Feb. 3, 1993. Haven't had one since, but I'm in the group that would go out on the porch and flame up the day I got the "it's terminal," news.

I woke up one morning in 1961 with a lung collapsed. I did not have the strength to get out of bed. The pain was the worst that I have ever experienced. It seemed like a good idea to quit smoking.

Eventually I persuaded my wife to quit.

Glad to hear that!

It almost smells like that guy below me smokes a pipe or maybe cigar after work. I wouldn't know the difference really but I get it in my apartment, perhaps through the stove vent.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother Marie, may she rest peacefully. My sister died in her 40s from lung cancer that spread. Neither of my parents smoked in our home, so they tried to show a good example, and my mother always preached to me that they were nails in my coffin when she found that I was smoking outside on the sneak. I liked it at the time, and didn't care.

I quit 12 years ago. Go Marlboro Reds ! Seriously though, it was difficult at first but since most of the people I know had quit by then I didn't have the temptation to start up again like others may have. Once in awhile I do get the urge , especially when I have that first cup of coffee. But it passes quickly. I am not sure if I could afford to take up smoking these days anyways !

I started smoking when I was a teenager, when cigarettes cost 35 cents/pack. It usually took me 2-3 days to finish a pack. I quit 'cold turkey' around 1990,cigs were then $1/pack There was no nitcotine patch or gum available. The smell of cigarette smoke bothers me now

I quit when I was 32. I remember the day, but not the date. I stopped the car, and threw a half pack of smokes in a trash can, and that was that, but life was Hell for the next couple of weeks. I did take up cigars years later, but didn't inhale, so quitting those was not much of a big deal. If you smoke good cigars, not the kind you get at grocery stores, the cost of a two a day habit is somewhere around $6000 dollars a year. That's enough to keep me away from cigars.
