Are you going to be spending more or less for Xmas this year?

Way less $. We won't be going anywhere this holiday season {fewer gift exchanges, less travel expenses, and less money spent on dinners} . We'll give what we can to my son and his spouse, but won't be able to be as generous as usual, due to medical bills. I feel bad about it, because things are tight this year for so many.

Less, but seems same as last year. Have gotten a few things that each of us needs (online). As far as the family goes, last year was nothing, because of moving expense. This year, sending some things we don't use anymore or have ever used. At least it's better than last years "nothing".

Well, to tie two threads together...I might spend lots more this year by going to Oregon and playing in the "snow", with the changing drug laws. :)

I doubt that our spending habits for Christmas will change much this year from previous years. We never made a big deal out of Christmas. My own family was never close enough to exchange gifts, and my wife's family only gave gifts to the kids until they were around 10 or so. We don't give each other gifts for Christmas. Instead, we buy what we need throughout the year as needed and usually when on sale.

To me, it has always been odd the way gifts seem to be handled:

1. People stressing over what to get another person.
2. People returning gifts the day after Christmas because what they got, they either didn't like or it was the wrong size or whatever.

I still remember a time when people often made gifts for each other, such as a sweater or other article of clothing, something made of wood, a painting, etc. These seemed to be valued much more than the "in" item of the season bought at some store.

It will be less, Every year for over a decade we have taken a Christmas trip, sometimes from Thanksgiving through Christmas and normally it has always been spent in another country. This year with the pandemic barking at our heels, we will spend it home is somewhat isolation to the world. So without the travel expenses it will be much, much less.

about the same
My siblings&I don't exchange gifts instead we give to charity
The only gifts I do buy for are my close friends Marcia&Dave, their 2 sons Alexei&Dave Jr since they are my'buffalo family'I give the guys gift cards from Kohl's,Target .Every yr I give Marcia&Dave subscription to Yankee Magazine, other little gifts

Way less! I just bought a bunch of stamps for my late wife's last Christmas Cards ($65 CND). That's it. No tree, no lights, no turkey, no set table, no Christmas music. No nothing. NADA! Maybe just a couple of good glasses of "Sailor Jerry", my favourite rum & sitting in front of the tube with Doc, Chester, Kitty & Marshall Dillon. Yep, it will be the "Long Branch Saloon" for me. Don't call me Scrooge. I have seen all the Christmases I ever want to see. Pretty well 73 years worth. I reckon I earned my rest. I leave all that madness for the young folks. Bless em' Pilgrim!

I'm with you packer, not sure about "sailor Jerry", never had that one but I will utilize woodford Reserve and don't forget Festus. Sorry about the loss of your wife.

It will be interesting to watch the What Did You Buy thread over the next month or so. We will probably all be hit with tons of emails touting a variety of sales, with the easy purchase just a mouse click away. At least some of the sales will be quite compelling, and I am sure there will be useful stuff on sale rather than the junk that gets sold on Black Friday at Walmart.

As an example, on 11/27, for one day only The Great Courses will be having an 80% off sale on their courses. My wife and I enjoy those courses because they are taught by college and university professors and are essentially auditing the class. We get to take courses we would have liked to take in college, but were outside our chosen major. I don't know if that counts as Christmas, but it is that time of year.

Much less. My husband was the extravagant one, he loved Christmas. We usually went away for Christmas, often up to the Wentworth Inn in Jackson, NH (White Mountains). Even though we have enough Christmas decor to do Macy's proud, he always found more to buy. Last year, it was a Santa that stands as tall as me. And he'd always surprise me with amazing presents...last year, it was a new wedding ring inset with tiny diamonds...my original ring cost $35. and was a bit shabby and tarnished (I wear them both, old and new).

I have no interest at all in Christmas this year...I'll get together with my sister and her husband, but that's about it.

About the same but with the twist of not footing the bill for flights & meals at restaurants. That cost will translate into the gift that is never wrong. Benjamins

I have only a couple that I buy gifts for. My Grandkids get the same each year and my daughter picks out the gifts because I have no idea what this stuff is that they would like to have.
We probably will spend less only because we won't be going out for dinner during the holiday and we usually enjoy a day or two at the casino in Atlantic City. Even though they are open I don't want to risk it and I don't want to sit there all day with a mask on. I'm happy to take it off after grocery shopping.

We actually had this discussion the other day....
less and every ones getting cash....
except the grandson.... Nana cant help but over spend on him....
