Are you hot or not?

Generally, more body mass per a given height, more heat per volume. Why larger people on average become overly warm more easily and are less likely to become cold. But of course there is more to it like genetics and environmental adaption one becomes used to. That is why aboriginal people in Siberia can be out in zero F degree weather wearing little like it was a spring day. Or why desert tribesmen on camels can travel long distances in triple digit F temperatures.

As a single digit kid in outer Sacramento suburbia, learned to love the hot dry summers. And as a many decades Tahoe snow skier, learned to dress correctly to enjoy cold below freezing temperatures. However generally, as a small thin Caucasian man, become cold easily. But my heat threshold before starting to sweat tends to be higher than others. With dry cool, skin, women can grab and hold me like an octopus without becoming hot or sweaty.

Excuse me.
When things get hot they expand. Im not fat Im hot. :D

It was Dang hot today in The Woodlands, and we were working right out in the heat of midday. See pic below from The Weather Channel.
We have lived in East Texas or the Gulf Coast all our lives except for the last 20 year when we was living in Africa not far North of the Equator.
We cannot take the Cold Weather. We start breaking out the Carhartt Coats when the temp gets in the upper 50's here.... ha !
But I can't take the heat like what I could as a young man working the Oilfields.

TLDNR - Installing Gate, got too hot acting like I was a young man working Offshore.

The following may not interest folks too much, but it does relate to the Hot Weather kicking in up North of Houston now. And I can tell the story of how most injuries to Old Men is acting like they was Young Men.... ha !

I pretty well proved that I am not near in shape as I was before Retirement.... duh !
We are having a fancy Gate and Door put in going to our Backyard.
We got tired of rebuilding the Wooden Gate that could not withstand the Weight and the Winds. Must have rebuilt the whole thing at least 4 times the last 20 year and it would not work good. Just too much weight for the Wood Columns and the Span of the Gate to support.

So, I found me a Fabricator and told him I wanted 8" or 10" Steel Columns sat in deep Holes/Foundations so the the 2 X Bat Wings on the Gates would not sag and will be able to withstand the Winds.

We scoped the work together and agreed on the price and design afew weeks ago. He has been getting the Pipe, Square Tubing and materials procured.

They started delivery and staging of the Columns yesterday and came today to start the Columns installation.

Within 20 minutes the Fabrication Crew putting in the 10" Sch 80 Columns and who will Fabricate the new Gate - cut our Fiber Optic Line while they was digging the Holes for Columns. Ha !
These things happen. Oh well, nothing that can't be fixed.

Called ATT and they scheduled a tech to come in the afternoon and replace the Fiber Optic Cable. I told them we would have the Conduit run by the time he got to the house
I went to the Home to get 240' of Conduit so we could put the new Fiber Optic Cable in Conduit.

We had to get the Conduit laid before the ATT Tech arrived. I about got too hot and ms gamboolgal got me some water and made take a Break.
Took us about 3 hours.
But we got done in time to pull the new Fiber Optics Cable so there's that.

I actually did get too hot and ms gamboolgal got aggravated with me acting like I was a young man working Offshore....

As ususal, she is right and I learned my lesson.

Tomorrow, we have a Crew of Young Men coming to hand dig the Trench for the Conduit. A bit over 200' and no telling how many Roots they will have to cut thru. They will then bury the Conduit in the Trench and backfill.

I fully expect them to cut the Sprinkler Lines - these things happen - ha !

You can see the Conduit on the Surface going back to the Pole in the back of the yard going by ms gamboolgal.
You can see the 10" Sch 80 Columns they put in today. Put them 4' in the Ground and alot of Cement.

Yes, I know the Columns are way too big and overkill. That's ok.

Tomorrow the Fabrication Crew will remove the Wood supports for the Door and replace with 4 Square Steel Tubing. They will then pull exact dimensions for the Gates and Door. Then they will be off to Fabricate the Gate and Door, Sandblast, Prime and Coat. They will use CNC Machine to cut the Texas Stars.

Fabrication & Paint will take near to two weeks - I imagine. Then they will come to install and do Touch Up Painting on the Columns.

They will also Square up and Cap the 10" Columns and Paint both of them and the Square Tubing in situ. They will match the color to the Gates/Door.

Below is a preliminary pic of the Gate design. We will have 2 Bat Swinging Sections and the Door.

Congratulations if you read all that ! Ha !

I will try to remember and post some pics of the completed Gates / Installation.

We moved alot when our kids was little and we was too poor to afford a fancy Swingset.
We just had the new Swingset put in for our little 17 month old Granddaughter and her little Pals to use. Our Granddaughter loves it and we have spent a lot of time swinging her and making sure she does not hurt herself.
Will be lots of picnics and cooking of Hotdogs and Hamburgers, Ice Cream, etc in the coming weeks and years.
I set up a 42" Bug Blower to keep a good breeze on the kids at the Swingset to help keep them from getting ate up by the evil Mosquitoes and the Satanic No Seeums... ha !

Retirement, ms gamboolgal, our Daughter and #1 Granddaughter is about as good as it gets for me.

There are reasons for feeling colder as we age.

Key Highlights
Older adults often feel colder than younger people as their bodies change with age.
A slower metabolic rate, thinner layer of fat and poorer blood circulation make them more sensitive to the cold.
Health problems like cardiovascular disease, anemia, diabetes and thyroid issues can make them feel even chillier.
Medications, like beta blockers and blood thinners, may also increase cold sensitivity.
It is important to watch for signs of cold intolerance in older adults. These signs include shivering, pale skin and slow breathing.

I think BMI plays a part in this. Mine is at 24.5 & I feel colder than I did 15 years ago. I definitely have lost that layer of fat. When temps are 90 & above that is comfortable. We keep our home at 78 degrees year round. That can feel to cool at times.

One thing I've noticed is fatter seniors don't seem to mind the cold as much, but do sweat a lot when it's warmer

Hot an cold is a big problem for us. as Knight stated ,medicines can play a big part.I freeze it seems until summer, he here lately is always hot.. Sign, he turns ac down, I turn up, cant afford that 72 degrees in here at time. This years has been some different here, Still sleep with windows open as it is very cool here at night. On gong battle for sure.

Retirement, ms gamboolgal, our Daughter and #1 Granddaughter is about as good as it gets for me.

Hi neighbor … I’m over toward Cypress area.

All I know is that I prefer cooler and rainier weather. I dread, dread, summer as summers here now (not 30 years ago) can be close to 40 degrees Celsius/104 degrees Fahrenheit. I wish it would hurry up and come and be over with.

Is there a great lose of trees up there? The wildfires really hurt climate.

I tend to feel cold more acutely than heat, but honestly as Ive aged have become less tolerant of extremes in either direction, at least when cold I can add layers.

Yesterday I had a guy come work on my tractor. Im working in my flower beds dressed in a short sleeve shirt and capris.
And Im barefoot since theyre adjacent to the patio. He has on a hat, a turtleneck, a long sleeve shirt, and a jacket. And he tells me he's cold.

First let me say its in the 70's here and I personally am hot. I am definitely not looking forward to later when its 80's and 90's.
I hate being hot and theres only so many clothes you can take off and still be decent. :D

Anyways this made me think about how everybody thinks old people are always cold.
Actually I was kinda looking forward to being old and cold. :D
I live in north Fla. We have had 5 days in the 90s in a row and now the forecast for the next 7 days is 90,95,96,95,94,93,91.....this is some very early heated even for N Fla. I am walking early before the heat rises. Its actually a cold front now and we may hit 61 Thursday morning.....brrr.

For all you folks complaining about being too cold in winter, too hot and or humid in summer. Today was near average with a low of 49F and a bit above normal high of 82F that is moderately dry humidity. Of course, moderated by the near but not too close Pacific Ocean.

Why so many people want to live in my county of 1.87m, that has the most expensive average residential real estate in the nation now at $1.75m average selling price. Of course, besides climate also much else including high paying tech employment and top universities.

Right here, right now (May) we have had maybe 3 days of real sun. The rest of the month has been cold windy and grey, grey, grey. Yesterday the weather was predicted to be that way all this week. May is close to being over and there have not been any of the days there used to be even just a few years ago. What is this??
We have the exact opposite, hottest spring in decades

It's Sunny and 63F. here today, breezy. I saw the Jet stream is changing over NA.
Almost put on a jacket shopping Tuesday afternoon. Had one on yesterday
changing Turbo's motor oil. Windy too, 15 mph NW! Northwesterly, and South Easterly winds
in the teens mph seem to be fairly frequent now.

I begin to wonder if the 1000's of wind turbines and Solar installs are changing
how the wind needs to get where it has to go?

why don't you wear a jacket if you're cold... why not ?
I NEVER see anyone doing that in the middle of summer out in public, so I just don't. I think there's a room I can leave a jacket hanging in at church. The sanctuary is always cold, so I might do that. But wearing a jacket out on public streets in Texas in summer would just be strange.

Hahaha. I would need 2 jackets if it was 65 in my house, and my electric bill would triple!
right now it's 68 degrees in my house... I have all the windows open because it's a sunny day..but I have them open every day anyway... It's a little breezy so I have a cardigan on... otherwise I would normally have some sleeveless thing on...
