Yup, I don't like having my information open for anyone to use as he sees fit. I happened to click onto a cartoon.. The next day, my browser page was full of cartoons. I don't like being made into a thing, which needs X. And they are picking my brain to sell me X.
God knows what somebody could do with all that intimate information. Your perceptions of the world could be manipulated, for political gain. I'm not a conspiracy nut, but I'm not comfortable with companies following my every move.

Would like to use the Tor browser, but could only get it downloaded to my phone...and I do not browse the internet from there. Could not get it onto my tablet or PC

Using a Tor browser can significantly slow internet speed because search results go through multiple servers. Might I suggest a virtual private network VPN that is not monitored by five eyes internet surveillance policy agreement. Look up five eyes internet surveillance agreement.

I am most pleased with www.expressvpn.com The app is available for mac desktop, windows 10, android and apple products tablet and smart phone.

This is very interesting! I had NO idea there were "safer" browsers. I have a new Dell PC that has Edge installed but I don't like it so I use Chrome. Years ago, on my other computer I had Firefox and loved it but they have changed and now it won't work on my Windows 10 and I've read that their security is not as good as it use to be. It's a dilemma, for sure. At least it is for me. Ha!

I was on Facebook years ago and got so sick of all the pop up ads and crap being thrown at me, I deleted my account and wasn't on it for quite a long time. Then, about 8 months ago, I re-signed up and did not "friend" anyone and only belonged to groups I had an interest in, like book clubs or quilting, etc. I didn't get any ads and it was all going very smoothly. I thought I had mastered how to keep myself "safe". Unfortunately, one of my groups, which was about memories of my hometown, had a post one day about a certain piece of architecture that had been built in town that was a total eyesore. There were hundreds of negative comments about it and I had said I didn't think it fit in with the architecture of the rest of the town. However, some troll, singled me out of all the nasty comments that were worse than mine, BTW, and called me an "old bitch" and said I must hate my life (WHAT????) and I should go to hell for trying to ruin his childhood memories of where he grew up. Seriously?? I was sick. I loved that group and it was a connection to my hometown. I felt betrayed that ADMIN did nothing even though I reported him. I looked him up and he's a early 40ish guy with a wife and a couple little kids. Made me wonder how he talked to them or his mother or grandmother.

That did it for me and FB or any other social media. What's wrong with people these days?

Sorry....needed to vent.

My browser is Mozilla Firefox and my search engine is duckduckgo. I've thought about downloading Nord VPN, but haven't decided. I do bank and shop online but I'm not sure I need a VPN.

duckduckgo is also my search engine. Have to ask the question, if internet privacy is important, is what you spend, where you spend it, how much it cost and how often you buy, not equally important?

You see, every time you purchase something with a credit or debit card, or if you have one or more loyalty cards, you are giving away your personal details. It's all logged onto your profile, then the really sinister part happens. Profiles are bought and sold, so that a complete dossier can be built up. That's why I pay cash as in the filthy folding stuff, for everything and I don't have a single loyalty card.
George Orwell would be saying: "I told you so."

Can you tell me why you prefer Firefox over, say, Chrome? BTW...thanks for the duckduckgo suggestion. I just installed it. I've always used Google but like the added privacy of ddg.

Hmmmm....ok, you use real, paper money. Fine. How do you pay bills and make payments? I'm assuming you may write a check? I'm soon to be 75 and use a credit card for everything...even my bills. So, by now, Big Brother has all the info on me that can be gotten because I've used CC's and bank online, etc. What are they going to get out of me at this stage of the game? Am I kidding myself that my info can't be hacked? No, but I don't think there's really any totally safe way to stay off the grid unless you live in a remote area in Alaska and never have any outside contact with anyone.

I don't have Chrome because I don't like Google, is all. Firefox is about as "private" as you can get for free. There are 1 or 2 newer ones that are as good or better, but I've had Firefox for several years and not into change at this point. Plus I believe their updates keep them in the top 3.

Hope I don't sound like a loon, but to be honest, it isn't market targeting or Big Brother, per se, that concerns me as much as political and propaganda targeting. And I don't think that's a big problem now but it feels like it could become one within the next decade or so. VPNs are illegal in some countries. There's a reason for that.

I had Firefox on my old Vista PC and loved it. Then, when I got the new Windows 10 on my new PC (didn't like Edge at all), I just kept Chrome and it's been good but I've missed Firefox. I've been thinking about going back to FF for a while and when this thread was posted, I did some reading about how FF has made a lot of updates, etc. but what I didn't know, and really liked, was their security/privacy features.

So......I installed FF today and have been enjoying it again. I never did like anything that was labeled "Google". Don't trust them at all. Do I need to uninstall Chrome???

Yes, you need to uninstall Chrome. And I didn't like Edge, either.

Awesome!

I use Chrome and Google. I use it in incognito mode if I don't want there to be a record of what I do. Occasionally, I use the Tor network for research on the novel I'm working on since it involves terrorism and I don't want the FBI seeing that, although they probably wouldn't, but just in case...

I use FF and DDgo but I'm not sure DDgo is so ambiguous as they'd like you to believe. Google still knows every search I do on DDgo and it makes me wonder. There are other engines out there that are super private. Chrome, I don't bother with nor Edge. I just don't like like either Google or Microsoft so I won't support them.

I have had no problems with Firefox ( having the latest version ). I buy stuff with my debit card, but rarely from Amazon, or Big Corp companies. ( But occasionally ). I think my info can be hacked, but the chances are not scary to me. If by chance I lose my checking account, se la veeeeee. Just another step closer to forever land. :) No, I care, and when us regular people start getting ripped off , a lot, I will do what I can to protect my info.
