Happy for you!

I'm about to finish Eric, it's really good. And I just started watching 100 Years of Solitude. I could never get into the book, much to my shame and chagrin, so I'm glad it was made into a limited series. IMDB rated it 8.1--high for them.

IMO Cumberbatch gives a 1st rate performance along with an excellent American accent. Since I don't like kidnapping stories, I was about to bail until at the end of the first ep, Vincent starts seeing Eric. That got my attention.

We're through the 4th ep now, and it's got us interested enough to finish seeing where it goes with the kid.

The show is very dark, and for some reason it doesn't "hang" together well. I can't put my finger on it. I tend to be too picky, and hard to satisfy...:cautious:

I know what you mean. I kinda debated whether to watch it or not because of it's 'darkness'...but I'm glad I stuck with it. Plus, Cumberbatch is so surprisingly good in everything he does.

I didn't feel that way about it not hanging together. I still have one ep to go. I think it's really good but then, I must admit, I prefer darkness in my entertainment.

Yes, many love dark pictures, or they wouldn't make them. It's very entertaining for a lot of folks.

But IMO this series was a major misfire. To me it got worse as it went along. They had the acting talent, but a script with lots plot holes in it. Even Cumberbatch could not sustain some of the sophomoric script writing. They tried to hit too many SJ/woke memes that didn't fit in a movie about a Muppet type show and kid. These steadily became too intrusive. The guy who played the black cop was miscast. The part would have been more effective with someone who could act.

They needed to show how the kid was upset enough and bold enough to follow some tramp into the subway chasms. It wasn't clear. Vincent was shown continuously drinking vodka, but that never caused him to be drunk except when a scene called for it. Then afterwards he'd snap out of his stupor in 2 seconds. It doesn't work that way. Some of his dialogue was pretty far fetched. The use of a hallucinatory character (in this case a big animal like James Stewart's rabbit Harvey ) is getting trite now. I've seen several recent productions (like Will Trent) that use the same gimmick. Eric had been in Vincent's mind, but all of a sudden Eric is kicking him in the subway??

By the end of the series I couldn't tell whether the show was about Vincent and his son, or about the ubiquity and display of homosexuality and pederasty. If families have their children watch with them, they're going to be shocked. I hope they notice it's got a TV-MA rating.

There was a potentially good story in there somewhere. But the writers and show runner went way wide of the mark. Anyway, that's my take. I'm sure many had much different impressions than I.

There are about 4 or 5 shows that I often rewatch when I get stuck on trying to find something new to watch. I call them my "comfort shows" even though they tend to be rather dark in tone. I was looking for something new to watch but ended up starting another rewatch of The Wire. It' probably around the 4th time I have rewatched the show. It's always fun to go back and look at the technology at the time the show was made. I love hearing the dial up modems :)

Now that you laid out the specifics, I see what you mean. I saw the ending a short time ago, which pretty much redeemed the darkness. It was based on a true story though.

We still have Starz and are on the second season of The Serpent Queen. It is not only historical, but the politics are entertaining with a more modern tone. It is edgy. We've agreed that the women in it are more powerful than the men. The actress that plays Catherine is excellent. In Season 2, Minnie Driver plays the Queen of England. Here is a description.

The series follows the story of Catherine de' Medici, who marries into the French Valois court as a fourteen year-old teenager expected to bring in a fortune in dowry and produce heirs. Despite many challenges, a lifetime of clever political maneuvering allows her to rule France as queen for 30 years.

this is a great post because i never know what to watch. i start so many and dump them shortly after. i did enjoy Crash Landing on You. About North Korea. It was a little far fetched but I liked the characters. It did have subtitles so u had to pay attention.

'Before' on Apple. It stinks, but I have already watched 8 of 10, so I guess I'll finish. I like the cast: Billy Crystal, Judith Light, etc.

Psychological 'thriller.'

I'm curious if anyone is watching Dexter: Original Sin. I enjoyed the first 5 seasons of Dexter and trudged through the last three. I'm curious about this new series since it does cover his earlier years so any input would be appreciated.

Edit: I just noticed that only one episode has aired so I'll check back in a few weeks to see if anyone has watched it 🤓

I do a lot of Britbox binges, but I learned to space them out so I don't a complete season of anything. Like I did with 'Midsomer Murders' I laid on the couch for about three weeks or more and watched almost 20 seasons. I also binge 'Alone', '60 Days' and 'Snapped'.

I loved that series, haven't heard too many people say they've seen it.
