Fascinating history there, thank you! My oldest son went to kind of a pre-Seal experience in Florida as a teen. Basically they took a group and dropped them off with instructions on how to get back to their "base". It was overnight, in swampland and it rained all night. When I went to pick up my boy he was psyched! It was great! When could he do it again?

I remember one Dad. His son was sobbing and the Dad was ready to smack him. Really it takes a certain mindset that not too many people have, especially young teens. My boy would have been a brilliant career soldier...he was aiming for SEALS right after high school...then 9/11 and all the recruiters he had spoken to were chasing him.

He came to me and said "No Mom I'm just freaked out no". I called them and explained yes my Dad proudly served, but no I am opposed to the present situation and you aren't getting my boy involved. Eventually they stopped calling. But like I said it's too bad. He would have made a perfect career officer.

I'm biased towards the Green Berets myself, since my oldest son is now a retired Green Beret Master Sergeant.

This is him with some of his team in Iraq. He's second from the right.
