Art, anything goes...

The Starry Night by Van Gogh

I think this unique musical instrument is definitely art. There is an organ in the Luray Caverns in Luray Virginia called The Great Stalacpipe Organ .

The organ produces the most amazing sounds I have ever heard. It uses the cave's natural formations to create music. Instead of traditional pipes, the organ's "notes" are produced by 37 different stalactites spread across 3.5 acres of the caverns that have been filed down to vibrate at particular frequencies when struck, like the strings in a piano.

When a musician presses a key on the organ (or a prerecorded piece is playing like a player piaon), a rubber mallet gently taps a corresponding, precisely tuned stalactite somewhere in the cave causing it to resonate and produce a pure musical tone. This ingenious design transforms the cave itself into a massive percussion instrument.

The cave's natural acoustics allows the ethereal music to be heard throughout the entire cavern system. You can't easily tell where the individual note is coming from, the music sound like it is everywhere. It's fun to walk around trying to spot the ones making the music.
