As I grow older I am less willing to forgive

Back to grammar.. I wonder what in the world is so difficult about contractions for some people.. The Apostrophe means a letter has been omitted. SO if you know you want to say "You ARE" why would you write "Your" instead of "You're" ? That's what a contraction means... the words "You are" are "contracted" by using an apostrophe in place of the letter "A" Same with "They are" and "They're" Can not .. Can't is not.. isn't

One of my "pet peeves" is ending a sentence with a preposition. And, there are wiki articles that suggest such is permissible in today's use of the English language. It still makes my hair... what hair I have left... stand on end. One of our daughters drives me batty with "Where are you at?" It's "Where are you?"!!!!! Anymore and I think she just does it to spite me!!! :>)

Have you ever watched "Inspector Morse" on TV. He was the most wonderful pedant.. for example...

Detective Sergeant Lewis: Death would have been instant, would it not?
Chief Inspector Morse: [Annoyed] "Occurred instantaneously", Lewis, or "was instantaneous" if you must. Coffee may be instant, death may not".

The north porch was was locked and had a notice pinned to it.
"Due to several acts of wanton vandalism........."
(Morse) satisfied himself by crossing through 'due' and writing 'owing'.

I usually ignore posts that contain too much bad grammar or 'text speak'. If people can't make the effort to write properly, I can't make the effort to read it.

Grammar and Communication Skills seem to be more and more a "lost art"....especially among so many of our younger people. Many of these "text and tweet" types skills seem to be limited to "LOL and OMG".

Hi, I'm new here. My virgin post, as it were. I zeroed in on the 'I'm less willing to forgive' thread because I thought it was about forgiving PEOPLE and their dastardly deeds :). But I see it is about words!

I've ground my teeth down to nothing over horrible grammar and spelling but have decided it's not a fight I have the time to engage in (ooh, ended that sentence with a preposition..don't hurt me!). What drives me mad is to find errors in the books I read. He 'poured' over the documents. My gawd, what did he pour over them!? She was a real 'trooper'. Yes? With a badge and Smokey hat and everything? sigh...so many others, so little time.

I can forgive, just take it in stride, lots of folks make these common errors. BTW, HS only here too. I have to disagree with #1. I couldn't care less is what I've always said, and means exactly what I wanted it to mean. That I could not care less. People who say they could care less, means they must care to some degree, because they could care less.

My shoelaces are loose, and winners never lose. I agree with this one, many times people write loose instead of lose.

The to, too, two is basic...but there are many times people write the incorrect form of the word.

What about irregardless, instead of regardless?

To my knowledge, there is no such word as "irregardless".

I think anyone using the word irregardless is being irresponsible, although the situation is not irreversible.

I forgive easily now and sometimes do not mean it. As I have aged and especially after death of my husband, I feel so vulnerable and dependent. I am going thru a scare right now with a retinal tear in my eye. I had to have laser surgery. I have nightmares thinking about losing eyesight in that eye.

Georgia, I can understand your fear. Recently my right eyesight has rapidly become cloudier and I've been terrified that it was macular degeneration or something like that. I finally went to the ophthalmologist and thank goodness, it's just that the lens put in after cataract removal has encapsulated. I'm scheduled for a 5-minute laser procedure that's supposed to put everything back on track again. Hallelujah!

As I grow older I am less willing to forgive ...

... people. In general.

Period.

Oh, wait, this is about grammar? Sheesh. Okay, well, I'm not allowed many mistakes being a writer - my editors tend to threaten me with bodily harm when they have to use too many red pencils on my drafts.

I hope im not judged on my spelling cause its not that great , Spell check spots my mistakes and if they are worth correcting i do , for the reader to understand the word .
I think there are more important things to think about and forgive .
And as long as the post is a good one ,i think we can disregard the spelling mistakes ..

Feel free to get upset on my post , :)

I tend to agree but I am talking grammar not spelling. When I say I find it hard to forgive, it is an exaggeration.
