Astronauts return to Earth

There’s apparently some disagreement as to where the astronauts’ capsule splashed down.

I watched the NASA broadcast of the return to earth, live, commercial free on C-SPAN and the woman describing the capsule’s descent repeatedly said it will splash down at 6:01 PM EST off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida in “The Gulf of America.”

The anchors on the 10 PM and 11 PM local news channels both said it splashed down in “The Gulf of Mexico.”

I guess that I’ll eventually get accustomed to the new name of the Gulf. It took me a while to grasp the switch from Standard Oil, to ESSO and then to EXXON.

I watched the whole thing live, it was so exciting. The Dolphins were the icing on the cake! I marveled at their great intelligence and sense of fun. Remarkable. Didn't catch the whole Gulf thing, thought they splashed down in Atlantic.

Very fulfilling to watch, glad they are home at last.

One of the interesting things about all this is the general lack of excitement. How jaded we've become about space travel, just in our lifetime.

This one I paid attention to especially since they were already stuck. Actually when the celebrities started going up brought my attention back to the space program.

Now it's newer or different tech with different countries, companies etc launching their own craft.

But yeh space activity is becoming so routine it's a sports broadcast reading off the game scores.

Indeed, I remember when virtually everyone in America [many outside America as well] were just glued to their TV screens during each launch / space venture , etc.

Now it seems all we care about is the super bowl ..... Sad for sure !

I can only imagine how thrilled they must be to be back on earth. I could never be an astronaut. I'm claustrophobic, and the thought of being in a tiny vessel so far from the earth is terrifying to me. I admire those who can handle it.

Thank you for this post. I could not find any info on the dolphins. I have a great interest in space activity. This year I resigned my volunteer position at our local space museum. We had the inside track to all things space and I never tired of it.

I think the dolphins realized it was a big deal and to me it was!. Sonar?

They had no choice but to handle it. The adjustment will be difficult. Lets hope they have the best help.
Dolphins are amazing!

It’s been 2 years already that I visited the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral located on Merritt Island on the east coast of Florida. I especially paid attention to all the training that astronauts must endure and successfully complete. It should go without saying that I was very impressed. Some of the training was displayed on video.

Each astronaut is considered a hero because, IMO, you have to be very brave just to be launched into space. There’s always a possibility of being incinerated on liftoff, or when the rockets go through separation like Soyuz 11, which the crew was destroyed.

I would have liked to been selected to go into orbit or now, travel to the space station. I never applied because I knew I would not qualify, but I can dream. If given the opportunity to go, I think I would have taken the opportunity.
