The child is lucky. He is born into wealth. Better rich than poor and probably a shot as an actor. I just cannot see anything negative about this. I think the child was wanted. That makes a big difference.

The out of wedlock birth rate in this nation is 40%.
About 1/3 of kids live in single parent households.
None of this is ideal, and one "bad act" certainly does not justify another, but there are lots of kids living without their fathers (and some number of other kids living with men who only fit the genealogical definition of that word), so Gere's kid is at no significant disadvantage relative to his peers.
A few years with a loving parent beats a lifetime with none or with one of the other kind (which is certainly not as good as a long time with a loving parent.) He's supporting the kid, so it don't affect me.

A long time ago, I read Tony Randall was 72 when his first child was born.. but if Wiki is accurate with his birthdate he was around 77. He and his wife had 2 kids.
