At least 4 dead in pedestrian bridge collapse in Florida

Yeah RR, 4 so far. They are still looking....8 cars crushed. I'm surprised the count isn't higher, but how terrifying. :(

That's terrible, I heard about it on the news too shortly after it happened. Either poorly constructed or poorly installed, regardless, it's scary that the people in charge didn't check everything and take all precautions necessary. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. :( Sympathy for the victims, and rest in peace to those who were killed.

If the rumor that the bridge was being stressed tested while pedestrian traffic not being shut down for such testing is true then there will be hell to pay by some. I can't ever imagine that could be true.

I imagine there will be hell to pay (as there SHOULD be) whether the rumor is true or not -- that bridge had only been up there for a few days, was incomplete, and clearly was unstable or it wouldn't have collapsed just days after being put up.

I heard about this shortly after it happened, but the number of fatalities wasn't known. So 4 unfortunate souls, what a sad thing.

They where sitting ducks, they where stopped under the walkway for a red light!!!

There seem to be more horrible fates awaiting innocent people all the time. Bridges collapsing on pedestrians? People being horribly sickened (or worse) by nerve agents in peaceful cities in England? And the poison is so deadly that it's even dangerous for people who have gone near the people who have ingested it. Packages with bombs being delivered to homes, as a hate crime.

Not to mention all the mass shootings. What a world we're living in.

Poor footings/foundation? This being a pre manufactured bridge had to be put into place. But to put it place the terrain had to be flat so the platform could drive/maneuver it into place. Meaning rather than being built in place with footings and foundation yards, not feet deep under the ground this had to be attached at ground level. If not properly secured immediately vehicle traffic could cause vibration/loosen things up.

Also if you look at footage of this bridge being put into place it seem to have broken at the same point where the moving platforms were supporting the bridge. Could the moving platforms have caused stress/damage?

Or a step, material, process etc was totally ignored, forgotten or overlooked ie negligence in this case criminal.

The bridge sounded like garbage from the beginning. Those poor people and the families of the victims. How unspeakably sad.

Latest update is Lead Engineer left a voicemail message for a state transportation official two days before collapse about "some cracking". He said he didn't feel it was a safety issue but needed to be fixed at some point. The voicemail was not heard until Friday because the DOT official was out of the office.
