Another robot has died in the depths of one of Fukushima’s nuclear reactors, as attempts to locate and remove melted radioactive fuel continue. This is the second robot in two weeks to meet its end in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, the site of a major nuclear accident caused by the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The robot’s mission was to investigate the pedestal underneath the Unit 2 nuclear reactor, where melted nuclear fuel is suspected to have fallen. But about 10 feet away from its target, one of the robot’s tank-like treads got stuck, World Nuclear News reports.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which operates the plant, decided to cut the robot’s cable and abandon it inside the reactor. A TEPCO spokeswoman told Phys.org that they don’t yet know whether radiation or debris stopped the robot.

So much information out there to wade through...

I've read news stories about Fukushima that run the gamut from WE'RE ALL DOOOOOOMED (radiation poisoning will kill us all) to DILUTION IS THE SOLUTION TO POLLUTION (the Pacific is so vast there's nothing to worry about) -- and it all makes my head hurt. Pretty frightening when metal robots can't even survive the levels of radioactivity at the site -- how the hell are workers ever going to be able to clean up the mess? Living on the West Coast, I've always included local salmon in our diet at least three times a week. We are very fortunate to have found a native Indian from a nearby reservation who shares his catch with us (cleaned and filleted) for only four dollars a pound. We joke with him about glowing in the dark but the fish is always fresh, tastes great, and there's no sign of any tumors or other irregularities. Fingers crossed for us all...

I too have been hearing/seeing the various reports from Fukushima for years at this point. Not only is their radiation I think they might be withholding the extent of physical damage from the earthquake/s and tsunami. It was already there for an inspection. Throw in any defects that were in the reactor and construction from day one it's a poop storm there now.

If anyone is worried about the possible negative effects from exposure to the Fukushima radiation, have no fear.

Conservative columnist, commentator and nuclear physicist Ann Coulter had the subject all neatly covered years ago and guarantees that your fears will be allayed if you simply read this 2011 column on the subject.
