Not necessary, it might just take police longer to find who did it. Looks like that's part of front, there are programs where if police take clear shot of that they can do an image search to ID type of vehicle. Then they put out a BOLO on that type of vehicle missing that part while also contacting auto body shops and dealers since looks like a newer model , about someone needing that part and the body work.

Still if i was owner of the mailbox i'd take out an ad or put up flyers on bulletin boards with this photo asking if the person wants it back. Criminals can be very dumb. There have cases of them entering a drug dealers house even tho there were police cars out front. (Think the story was in a 'Dumb Criminals' book) When the police realized they hid their cars and made even more arrests.

We had an incident here a few years ago where the perps tried to steal an ATM machine by wrapping a chain around it and attaching the chain to the bumper of their pickup.

Of course, all it did was rip off the bumper. They then took off, leaving the bumper, complete with license plate, behind.

They were apprehended shortly.

Likely a drunk - maybe with no license or insurance. We tolerate all 3.
That mailbox could have been a pedestrian or bicyclist; it often is.

Many houses in that upper class neighborhood no doubt have security cameras, so it shouldn't be too hard to identify the vehicle and the people in it.

I've been thinking about getting a security camera for our house. They're so cheap. Or maybe I'll just get a sign stating that we have surveillance cameras without actually getting one, just to act as a deterrent, although crime in my neighborhood is pretty rare. I do worry when we go out of town that someone will break into the garage and steal something, but I worry about a lot of stupid crap. If that were to happen, insurance would cover it so WTF? I'm just a worrywart.
