Aussie couple reject Down syndrome child from Thai surrogate!

This has caused outrage on the part of many with surrogacy laws now being examined. A mitigating factor on the couple's part is that they wanted an abortion but the Thai surrogate wouldn't do it as it was against her culture.

Since then the story has become rather muddied.

Although it was said that the Australian couple demanded the disabled boy be aborted and that they refused to take him after he was born, they say they never knew about him.

The Thai mother is very upset about what the biological father has been saying and is threatening to sue.

I have started a thread at Speakers Corner (Groups) to discuss commercial surrogacy as a moral/ethical issue.

So, is it a case of heartless clients wanting a baby, a rogue surrogacy agency or something else.
 
Thought I read one report where the surrogate says she was informed too late in the pregnancy It wasn't until the 7th month they told here. They definitely need to look at surrogacy laws. I'm glad to see the public responding with 200k for the child.

The ABC understands a West Australian father at the centre of a surrogacy scandal in Thailand has a child sex offence conviction.
The 56-year-old man from Bunbury in the state's South West was jailed for sexually molesting two girls under the age of 10 when he was in his 20s. He was also accused in 1997 of another six charges of indecently dealing with a child.

The Thai surrogate Pattaramon Chanbua, 21,has accused the man and his wife of abandoning their Down syndrome son, known as Baby Gammy. The couple denies knowing about the boy and says doctors only told them about his healthy sister.
Ms Chanbua revealed last week Gammy also has a hole in his heart.

She said she gave birth to twins after agreeing to be a surrogate for the Australian couple in return for a promised payment of about $16,000.

A donation fund was set up after Ms Chanbua said she could notafford Gammy's medical treatment.
The Hope for Gammy fund has already raised $230,583.

I hope the child they adopted is removed from them as the guy is a pervert who should never be anywhere near children!

The Thai mother is wanting the twin girl to be returned to her. I reckon she has a good moral case.
Legally I'm not sure she has one now that the baby is in Australia. It will be difficult.

I've looked up the West Australian rules regarding surrogacy. The maximum age for the parents is 52. The biological father in 56. Also a police check must be obtained.

I'm wondering what ruse was used to bring the baby girl back into this country.
I hope the police are all over his computer right now.

This sounds like a can of monkeys mated with a can of worms. There is little mention of the rights of a new born baby. In either, Aussie law, Chinese law, or the originating Thai culture. Then there is the possibility the Aussie couple were going to raise the daughter to either engage in sex acts with them, or perhaps to sell after she had grown a up little.

Non of this matters. As a matter of ethics, I feel like we need to call in King Solomon: "Where are the Aussies and the parent?" "Right here your majesty." "Cut all of them in half and feed them to the dogs." "Yes your majesty."

Society, all society, has a duty to this precious life to protect and nurture it. This child has been treated as if it were a means to an end. It goes against the first idea of ethics that our laws in the U.S. are based on. I would hope the Aussies feel the same. The orientals have not always treated newborn females or the mentally challenged with respect. I do not know about the Thai culture, but my hunch tells me that the mother would not be so amenable to take this baby if it was not for $200,000 in the bank.
