Australian Government acting unlawfully in detaining asylum seekers on Manus Island

An appeal to the PNG High Court has resulted in the ruling that the detention of asylum seekers in PBG violates the PNG constitution and the changes made by the PNG government last year are also unlawful and invalid.

This leaves 700 men on Manus Island in limbo. The minister whose portfolio this comes under has vowed that they will not ever be allowed to set foot in Australia and PNG is a very dangerous place for them to be set free. At the moment attempts at resettlement have only resulted in less than 10 men taking up the offer. One has even come back to Manus asking to go back in detention because he couldn't find work and was facing starvation.

Australia's treatment of refugees who arrive by boat is nothing short of shameful and one day we will answer for it in an international court.

It seems like 'mankind' is evolving in fits and starts doesn't it? A good thing here but over there, appalling! It can get very disheartening.

Today a man was on a plane destination Manus Island and he started screaming uncontrollably. He had been sent to Port Morseby for medical treatment and was being returned to the detention centre. Unable to calm him, he was removed from the plane. Now there is doubt that the poor bugger can ever be returned to detention against his will. What will happen to him is anyone's guess.

Who knows ndynt? We are not allowed to see their faces or know anything about them.
However we do know that they come from places such as Middle East hot spots, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

Women and children are sent to Nauru which is also unsafe and lacks suitable medical facilities. They have to be flown to Darwin to give birth or for urgent medical treatment. A man on Manus died recently because he was not evacuated in time. His evacuation was delayed for nearly 30 hours. The call for a plane went unanswered because the office was closed and no-one checked the emails.

Australia is able to deny responsibility because they aren't detained on Australian soil, even though we pay for the whole debacle.

This is the notice board outside the church of one of my favourite clerics.
Mr Dutton is the Minister for Immigration and the government always refers to asylum seekers as "illegals" although there is nothing illegal about coming to a country in search of safety.

The Prime Minister of PNG is ordering the detention centre closed.

I can't understand how the government allowed itself to be caught flat footed. It must never have occurred to them that the PNG High Court might rule against them. Such arrogance!

We are due for an important election on July 2. It hasn't been called yet but it will be a double dissolution of both houses, the first for about 30 years. I hope the poor asylum seekers don't end up being the meat in the sandwich between Labor and Liberals. This issue should be bipartisan but it has been a political football for 15 years with both parties in a race to see who can treat them most cruelly. Only The Greens are showing any compassion.

An Iranian man on Manus has set himself alight as a protest. He is clinging to life but has not yet been evacuated to Australia for medical attention.

Things are getting even worse. Zika virus has been confirmed on Nauru. As if malaria wasn't enough.
Nauru is where we have sent the families, including pregnant women, babies and children.

Not to worry though. We have rushed supplies of insect repellent to the island. :soangry:

Asylum seekers issued with repellent after Zika virus confirmed on Nauru

Pregnant asylum seekers detained on Nauru could be exposed to the Zika virus, with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirming there had been cases of the mosquito-borne disease on the island nation. The revelation was made in the department's submission to the Senate inquiry into the treatment of asylum seekers at Australia's regional processing centres on Nauru and Manus Island.

Detainees have been issued with heavy-duty insect repellent in order to fend off the virus, which has been linked to a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly. The Australian government's smartraveller website currently recommends women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus is active.

"If you do decide to travel, talk to your doctor first and strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during your trip," it says.

On Wednesday evening, Australian Medical Association (AMA) vice-president Stephen Parnis said pregnant asylum seekers on Nauru needed to be protected, assessed and "not exposed to any risk". He stopped short of saying whether the woman should be removed from the island. The admission that Zika is present on Nauru comes in the same week senior doctors, including the AMA, raised grave concerns about the standard of medical care available to asylum seekers held in offshore detention, which they said would not be accepted in Australia.

In its submission, the department said "every precaution" was being taken to stop transferees contracting the Zika virus.

"Insect repellent with higher DEET content has recently been provided to transferees in Nauru and Manus for use," it said. The department also outlined a disease control program, overseen by health services contactor International Health and Medical Services (IHMS), which includes "regular fogging operations" and mosquito larvae surveying and monitoring.

There have been 11 babies born on Nauru to mothers who sought asylum in Australia. As of March 2016, another seven refugees on Nauru were pregnant.

The department said that women in the regional processing centre were cared for by IHMS medical professionals, including a full-time obstetrician and midwife, with the support of the Republic of Nauru Hospital.

Pregnant women settled within the Nauruan community receive care from the Settlement Health Clinic located at the hospital.
The Republic of Nauru has a population of about 10,000 people.

Fairfax Media has contacted the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for comment but is yet to receive a reply.

Some further articles. The government is sending out very mixed signals about what it is going to do in the face of this problem.

The Labor Party is starting to split but will probably hold firm to the unconscionable for electoral reasons. We go to the polls on July 2.

I like this statement by one of the Labor dissenters

"We have caused them enough suffering already. This is a sick game and it needs to end.
