In my early days as a science teacher one of my students brought in her brother's pet diamond python. We were learning about classification of vertebrates at the time so I decided to take it out of its box to show the class. I couldn't teach very well at that time and was keen to generate some excitement to capture the class' attention. As I held it aloft with one hand around its neck and the other about 2/3 the way down its length it curled loosely around my arm and seemed to be quite comfortable. The lesson was very successful but when it was time to put it back in the box I had to decide which hand to let go first. Obvious choice really - not the one closest to the teeth. As soon as I let go of the tail end I had a rather annoyed snake coiled tightly around the other arm.
Managed to get it back in the box without mishap and should have left well enough alone but I was quite fascinated by the python. I took it out for another class even though the lesson had nothing to do with biology. To show its displeasure the snake shat on the demonstration bench while I was holding up for all to see. I did manage the transfer into the box much better that time.
Then it was lunch time and I took the snake for a walk around the corridors causing students and teachers to scatter. Very amusing.
After lunch, still fascinated by the reptile I opened the box and put one arm in to move the water bowl. The snake had had enough of me and struck out. Fortunately it didn't bite. It just gave me a hard slap with its nose.
I just read the spice aisle story and loved it. Instead of screaming and running there's, "I'll go get my snake bag." I can't speak for the whole country but every Australian I've ever known has been easy going and good humored like that. If that snake had popped up in a Piggly Wiggly in Texas there probably would have spice jars exploding everywhere from the gun fire.
The Australian lock down is so sad. My favorite YouTube series to follow is, "Doggy daycare" which films the goings on at a big heavenly place for dogs from Sydney to have a day our in the country. Now it's closed and Bandit the boxer will be crying in his apartment.
