G'day, everybody, from Australia!
I'm "new-ie"" here, just 69 young at the end of November.
Interests?: many, gardening, mens shed, photography, etc.,etc...

Welcome, Babyboomer, and happy birthday! Just have to ask...what is men's shed? Not a term I'm familiar with.

Again, happy to have you with us.

Welcome, Boomer!

Katy - a men's shed is the same as a woman's shed, it just has its two main supports placed lower. ;)

'The Men's Shed' is one of the better ideas someone has had down here. It was primarily started as a place for retired men to gather and discuss hobbies and set up as a workshop for those who had no room at home. Many retired people move to smaller units and it leaves the men with no 'shed' to flee to and tinker with things. Sheds are an essential part of the male existence in OZ and the deprivation was seen as a risk to retirees' life spans. (Personally I think it was invented by a woman who wanted 'him' out of the house.)

They've since spread Nationwide and are a great boon, and even some younger men are joining the old blokes to learn a few crafts etc.

They are the equivalent of the craft groups that women form but more formalized and funded for equipment and the building, I'm not sure by who exactly though.

Hope I got that right Babyboomer? ... Welcome to the forum, there are few of you 'old blokes' here with similar interests so hope you'll join 'em here. Just don't gang up on we poor delicate old girls okay?

TY, all for wellcome's.
Yeah, the Men's shed, or Men's cave, it is all Ok, till missus or the kid crawls in and tries to organize it!
I know exactly where to find what, under each pile of mess!

Thanks, Di. That's such a good thing for these men. I smiled at the idea that a woman may have started it, as I have 2 friends when got their first job ever when their husbands retired. LOL

Hi babyboomer, sounds like your man cave is like my hubbies, I wouldn't even dare to suggest it needs tidying.Only he knows where everything is, or does he.!!

MEN SHED, Shall we call it " the secret of the trade"?
By the way, should I buy my wife, a new Battery drill, for Christmas, ??

We could use a few of those shed here as well. We sadly a gathering hole. We used to have spit and whittle areas on the courthouse square but these are frowned on now days. We're kinda left hanging with no one to associate with. A shed for the men would come in useful.

Yeah go for it Bboomer, we can't live forever right? A boss once bought his wife a paint sprayer! ... and was silly enough to tell us girls about it, he copped it worse at work than he did at home.

Men's sheds are a big tradition here, 'secret men's business' goes on in them and they are considered sacred female exclusion zones.

Drifter: The new movement to provide community ones is a great idea. There are plenty of Youth centres around but little for retirees, and these serve a great purpose, that 'spittin 'n whittlin' place for old blokes to gather in. Women have cits clubs and craft groups but the older men got left out.

Here's a link to ours, there may be someone interested enough to kick them off over there if they haven't already.

Welcome to the forum. How are things in Australia? It's rainy and overcast here in London so I'm envious of your sunshine.

Best Wishes, Along the Thames
