Bake Shops

Just curious how much a nice, but not special, donut costs in a bake shop - not a chain. It’s so rare that I go in one, that I was shocked. $3 for a regular donut. $5.50 for a Napoleon. Plus taxes.

Today in a shop owned by a European it was almost $17 for a Chocolate Mousse, a small macaroon, and two small croissants. All were delicious and I don’t object to the price. The quality was there. It just surprised me. I must live under a rock.

BTW, I think a donut at Tim Horton’s is $1. Really don’t have a clue what these things cost.

There are a couple of high end Italian bakeries in my area with prices similar to the ones mentioned in your post.

A small family owned bakery near my apartment charges eighty-five cents each or nine dollars a dozen for plain or fancy doughnuts like headlights or taillights. My choice is always a peanut stick or a cream filled luncheon stick covered with powdered sugar.

Both types of bakeries have their place but I love to see the dads lined up early on Sunday morning with the kids waiting to pick out a box of doughnuts at the little family bakery.

Yes in our stand alone or artisan bakeries cakes etc are much more expensive than in chains or supermarkets...

Around 150 % mark-up I would say

For quite some time we had two European bakeries (outside the supermarket ones we have) that not only specialized in baked goods that one could not find anywhere else, but they also took custom orders and special requests.

$1.50 to $3 (something) I remember was normal, and a couple of years ago while out on a wilderness trek, hubby and I stopped in at a European bakery to get a cup of coffee along with a couple of pastries, and the bill came in at over $10.

When I splurge and get a delivery from McDonalds for breakfast I always get a huge cinnamon roll for $2.50 that is still warm when delivered. It goes great with a hot cup of black coffee! Back in the day there was a chain of Southern Made donut shops. They even posted what times they were being made so you could get them hot. Best doughnuts ever. They were a weekly Sunday morning treat.

Fresh is what makes the difference.
It sure is.

These bake shops I was talking about weren’t upscale. Just strip mall shops. If it’s good, I like to shop in non-chain places. Went back this morning for a couple of things to take home and also bought croissants with an egg & Swiss cheese. Yum.

I find all of Tim Horton's baking to be way over-sweet.

Do you have a Safeway in your area, Jules? If so, if it's anything like ours you won't be disappointed.

We have Safeways but I never found them as good as the ones in the US.
I've never got to enjoy pastries across the line (were homebodies), but I do remember as a young child, my mom would buy a half dozen donuts that would have a light sprinkling of white granulated sugar over them, and they'd melt in your mouth!

I can still smell the mouthwatering smell today. They'd be boxed from the store, and I couldn't wait to get home from shopping to have one!

Learned something new. The baker was there today. He doesn’t slice bread because then it needs to be stored in a plastic bags. Paper is good but a linen bag is best for storage. Never have heard of this.

I took these photos earlier today in the supermarket so you can see the price specifically of Krispy kremes...( similar generic iced doughnuts costs much less)>..

3 for £5.50..or £2.25 each

...or 12 for £12.95

Over $3.00 each or $18.00/dozen. WOW!!!
yep they're very expensive ... whereas we can buy similar.. generic own brand supermarket donuts £2.00 for 12... in one of our supermarkets..( not the one I was in today)..

However the Krispy Kremes are the same price regardless of where we buy them ..I refuse to pay for them now..
