Bakers Dozen

Planets..

1. Mars
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Venus
5. Neptune
6. Pluto (it'll always be a planet to me)
7. Mercury
8.

Um, the moon and the sun are not planets. So please forgive me, but I've removed them.

Back in my teaching days, we used a mnemonic to remember the planets in their order out from the sun. We used the fictitious name
Mister Vem J. Sunp .
I've always remembered the planets in the right order because of that. (Even though Sunp doesn't exactly sound like a name, but close enough),

Planets..

1. Mars
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Venus
5. Neptune
6. Pluto (it'll always be a planet to me)
7. Mercury
8. Jupiter
9.

(9 will have to be the end of the list, unless someone knows the names of planets in different solar systems. But 9 is all we have, even including Pluto.)

Planets..

1. Mars
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Uranus
5. Neptune
6. Pluto (it'll always be a planet to me)
7. Mercury
8. Jupiter
9.

I replaced the duplicate Venus with Uranus. One more to go!

Holly, I would normally agree with that, as most of our lists are matters of opinion and personal taste. (Great movies, etc.) But when making a list of astronomical bodies, either it is that thing or it isn't. If we have a list of planets, should people be able to add "purple" or "rose bushes" or "Citizen Kane" and we have to leave those things as part of the list? Sorry, I respectfully disagree.

Also, this same list had an inadvertent duplicate removed by someone else. Was that also wrong?

I did wonder about a Baker's Dozen list asking for planets, since we only have 8 (or 9, if you include Pluto). But then it occurred to me that there are probably zillions of planets in the universe, and some of them do have names here on earth. So, if anyone is smart enough to know any of them, I think they would be entirely correct to include them in a list of planets, since it didn't specify planets around our sun. Is that what Orcus is?

I understand what you're saying Sunny.. but even if someone posted purple or Citizen kane.. you cannot remove their post.. you can skip round it.. you can point out that it's wrong and ask if they want to remove it, and if someone was spoiling the games by continually posting wrong items, then that would be a different matter.... but you can't remove it..... yes a duplicate removed by someone who didn't post it, is wrong.. you have to ask for the poster to remove it..or ignore it and post around it..

Incidentally Orcus is a dwarf planet..

OK, here's one. Haumea is defiinitely a planet.

Starsong, if you google "Moon a planet or not," here are two of the answers:

1. Rather than being a planet or a star, the moon is a natural satellite that orbits the Earth. The moon formed around 4.5 billion years ago due to a collision between the Earth and another planet. The debris from this collision entered into Earth's orbit and eventually coalesced to form the moon.

2. Is moon a planet or not?

The IAU definition also excludes moons from being planets

The bold type was part of the google answer, not put in by me.

Holly, if the list had asked for "celestial bodies" instead of planets, it would have opened up all sorts of possibilities for correct answers.
I've found several times that the number of answers we can expect is important in this game. Occasionally, lists have been dropped midway, because it was too difficult, or impossible, to come up with 13 answers.

But since you asked for planets, you made it nearly impossible for anyone except a very knowledegable person to list 13 actual planets.

I don't understand why you are so incensed about this. If I listed a duplicate (it's happened) or an item that clearly doesn't belong, I would expect anyone who is sure it is wrong to remove it, without dancing around, pointing out, asking the person who posted it to please remove it (even though they may play this game very rarely) or whatever else would complicate matters. And adding the requirement that we make Solomonic decisions about whether someone is spoiling the game by continually posting wrong items, or not, would bring these games to a screeching halt.

Do you play Wordle? If someone tries to enter a word that is spelled incorrectly, it is immediately rejected by the game. End of subject. Just try again.

Anyway, here's the "new, improved" list.

Sunny stop..I'm not incensed about anything... I'm just telling you, you cannot remove other people's posts.. that's against all the rules of the forum... and also Sunny this is not an exam it's a game... stop taking it so seriously !!

Right lets' move on from this... any pedants might want to stay away from this game ..
