I try to not buy souvenirs either, @hollydolly. After a short time, most are little more than junk for the landfills. :(
 
You don't have to buy them, some of them are gifts. Once, on a visit to Martha's Vineyard (a wonderful resort island off the coast of Massachusetts), we visited an art gallery, and the owner, a popular artist, was working on an amusing painting. I admired it, and he gave it to me! It's still hanging in my house, and reminds me of that trip every time I see it.
 
But I could do without gifts of t-shirts, mugs, etc. given to me by my kids and grandkids, advertising places they have visited, which I have never been to. Or paintings of places that someone else decided I would love to hang up in my home because they visited that place. A lot of gifts are probably bought with good intentions, but they just present a problem. (Good grief, what do I do with this thing? She is going to expect me to hang it up!) 😁
