Baldwin faces charges.

That's true, he is an actor, but he was also handling a real gun. Anybody who handles a real gun should follow proper safety protocols. Guns don't become less lethal when on a movie set, as was demonstrated by his carelessness.
Guns are potentially dangerous and one should never be causal with them.

The last time I shot a rifle was during Navy boot camp, 55 years ago. I don't even remember how to load the thing. So, if someone gave me a weapon, and told me there were blanks in it, I wouldn't be able to judge for myself. How would I know they were blanks?

But I wonder if I hire an electrician to rewire my home, and he screws up and burns the place down, am I responsible for his errors, because I didn't "supervise" him? Wouldn't it be the same as Baldwin hiring a known fire arms consultant, with movie experience? Baldwin may civilly be liable, but criminally liable???? I dunno.
YOu wouldn't, but nor should you believe them, either.

Too much at risk.

He said he pulled back the hammer and let it fall. Same thing.
Weird.

If he pulled it back halfway, it would half cock, assuming it was a single-action cowboy type revolver. If the hammer fell from a half-cock it would not be likely to hit the primer hard enough to fire.

If he pulled it back further, it would have cocked. If the hammer fell from full cock, it would fire.

But from either half-cock or full cock, the hammer won't drop unless you already have the trigger pulled.

Gosh, everything about this is sloppy and careless.

In some ways, it's the grown-up version of the 6 year old shooting, huh?

It was an antique or replica of an antique cowboy style revolver. I have no idea how the cocking action works, but that's what he said.

There a lot of Italian replicas. Most work like I described because there is this thing called "cowboy shooting". It's a sort of hobby.

I have never really handled anything like these, but read up on how they mechanically function.

Frankly, the function is what really interested me about firearms: how does it work, exactly?

In the old cowboy movies the hero would "fan" a single action revolver. Presumably the trigger needs to be pressed down for this to work?

Heard he's hired really powerful lawyer...
Will 'get off'!
Being objective as i can, I think he has a good case for some form of simple tort (not criminal) negligence, with the really heavy blame falling on the prop department and set firearms guy.

To me it seems appropriate.

Nope, I don't like his public persona much, but that's not the point. I don't think punishment/non-punishment should be based on a popularity contest.

Whatever unions they have in the entertainment industry should set up some rules and procedures when it comes to firearms used in production of a movie. No live ammo would be a good start. They use CGI to make dinosaurs and WWII airplanes so why not shootings?

I once saw Alec Baldwin as guest host of a "Saturday Night Movie" special on TMC. I was really impressed by his knowledge and also by the kind and generous way he spoke of long-gone movie greats.

Every time I think he's a jerk, I think about that Alec Baldwin.

Obviously a warning shot to the whole movie industry that they need to become serious about handling of any dangerous weapons with appropriate protocols so will never again be business as usual. So yeah being made an example of and thus likely to serve at least some time lest not be taken seriously.
