He was a cavalry officer fighting in Russia. And was considered to be a very brave man.
It is thought his outlandish story's were a way of telling people the folly of war.
He is buried in Bodenwerder Germany.

We learnt about him in secondary school German language classes but I couldn't appreciate the humour at that age.
That was long before I discovered Monty Python.
