Yup. The strategy is very different now. I was listening to Tim Kurkjian explaining back in spring training how the strategy now is for pitchers to throw as hard as they can for as as long as they can in a game without going over that pitch count. There are not many "crafty" pitchers such as Greg Maddux starting now.Pitchers are generally left in until they reach 100 pitches. However, if a starter isn't having a great game by the time he reaches the 4th or 5th inning, he's usually replaced. In some instances, it could be even an earlier inning in the event that the manager or pitching coach notices a difference in how the starter is throwing. Often it is due to an injury or illness.
Nolan Ryan was just a freak of nature. And I do remember Wilbur Wood starting every third game for a couple of seasons. Granted, he was primality a knuckleball pitcher, but still remarkable. Randy Johnson is a guest on a local sports radio show here a couple of times during the baseball season and the last time I heard him he said that they would have to rip the ball out of his hands if he was pitching in this current era...lol.
