Bed and Mattress Suggestions

We've had so much trouble with mattresses in recent years. We spend a fortune, have the things lugged in, and they only last about five years. The one we have now has shuffled all it's soft topping to the middle. What I've always disliked about it is that you can't sit on it to get dressed without sliding off onto the floor. Last night I was tossing and turning over something and it almost rolled me out several times.

So, we're looking for new mattresses and while we're at it we've decided to switch to twin beds. His A-fib, my acid reflux, arthritis, etc, has made us think we need our own space to adjust to our individual needs. The dog will have to make a hard choice on who she likes best.

A quick look around the internet makes it look like the two bed and mattress sets, plus new sheets and covers will have us looking at about $5000. With no guarantee we'll be comfy.

Anyone had experience with this?

I recently bought a Sleep Number bed (king size). I wake up with no aches or pains now. And since it has individual settings, we can adjust each side to whatever is comfortable for each of us. My bed is lower now (I used to have one of those thick oversized mattresses) and I can sit comfortably on it. $3000.00.

2021, we replaced our old Divan bed base and orthopaedic mattress. We wanted something lighter and much more comfortable.

We got this amazing iron bed frame (double) from Amazon UK. It was less than £100 plus mattress, superb memory foam but ex-models from British Heart Foundation.

I'd recommend these for you guys, it's from Amazon USA, so far most expensive was $2,599 including mattresses with remote control adjustable king XL. Hoping this page with multiple choices helps you get a bargain plus comfortable nights' sleep.

When I changed mattresses I was determined I wasn't going to get an expensive one as I didn't have issues sleeping. I could sleep on about anything.
I was wrong. I got one at Sam's under $1000 and it had dips in it after about a month. I'm always sinking into one.
I sleep OK but I'll give this one a year or so and replace it with better quality.
Apparently, I'm not young and I can't sleep on anything anymore. 😊 I'd rather have my old mattress back.
Lesson learned. I'll be interested in the comments.

I am single and have a queen mattress and my dog likes to join me at night as well. I was thinking along the lines of a day bed. But, they don't have box springs but, look comfy and don't cost as much. But very little room for my dog. I am like you, going to think about a twin bed vs a day bed, Lots of thinking.

We've about decided on the twin beds. Among other things Hubs occasionally dreams out loud with yelling, kicking and thrashing arms. Aside for it being dangerous for me, he's thrown himself clear out of bed a few times. The twin beds will be lower with firmer sides on the new mattresses for less chance of rolling out.

Thanks for all your input everyone!

Here's the mattresses were looking at. They claim good side support and will hold up to 550 pounds should we continue to eat like we do. ;)

We had a sealy pillow top for well over 25 years not thick like today's mattresses and loved it but it just wore out and we were forced to get rid of it about 4 months back. We got a sealy high point hybrid firm. It is very heavy to move and hard to put on sheets and tuck them at bottom. It gives on sides when you sit which I don't like that much.

My neck and lower back are much better so I am keeping it but I am not 100 % thrilled with it, my husband likes it just fine.

After having many different mattresses, we bought a Sleep Number & never looked back. They have a wide price range & something that everyone should be able into their budget. Ours was the middle price range. LOVE IT! No more flipping & you are always able to adjust the setting to what you need.

I highly recommend these. @ Caroln & @Happyflowerlady also pretty well summed up what I've heard from others who have them.

Tuft & Needle online nine years ago. It's as great today as it was then. DD bought one on my recommendation... she and her DH are not "dainty" people. DSIL weighs close to 300 lbs; I'll guess she's around 225-240. They've had it for six years and are as pleased with it today as they were when they got it.

DGS and DGD both have T&N as well. They both got theirs on DD's recommendation.

There are a lot of bed-in-a-box mattresses available. Some are way too spendy, but there are many more moderately priced. They all offer a money back guarantee. Do your due diligence.

Don't pooh-pooh them! They came about when Tempurpedic's patent expired, and many long-time employees left to start their own companies so know what they're doing.

When we replaced our last mattress, it was too high. This was one is too low. It’s also too deep. For the warranty, it must be rotated monthly and flipped every 6 months. The salesman said to just do it every other month and say we did. It‘s so darn heavy, we just do it when we have company to help. It was overpriced too. It is still like new, so maybe it wasn’t overpriced.

If I had to move often, I’d love to find a minimalist bed. Just one mattress on a frame. Sliding boxes for underneath, but not built in.

The best mattress and box springs I had over the years was from a place named Mattress Factory. They make them and they are very well made too. Very comfortable. I got a Firm one. They cost somewhat less too because you buy right from the factory. There's no middleman making a profit.

The Mattress Factory I'm referring to is in Cleveland Ohio. I don't know if there's one in your area but it may be worth looking into.

Thank you all for your input! Special thanks to @Georgiagranny for the phrase "not dainty people." LOL

I made a decision last night and bought two mattresses from the Big Fig company mainly because I fell for that $800 off on the Labor Day sale.
They won't come for a few weeks and the two beds we bought from Ashley won't come for a few weeks either so we have time to get rid of our huge four poster and gigantic mattresses.

We have to put those beds together ourselves! Nobody wants to set up and deliver these days, just deliver.

Naturally, I slept like a baby last night and have buyer's remorse today, but in the long run I expect we'll be glad we have seperate beds for all our old age problems.

We're halfway through this now and it is so stressful, all the decisions and dealing with people and deliveries.

The beds came yesterday after waiting for delivery 4 hours. We can't start putting them together yet because the directions say to assemble them where you'll use them, don't move them afterward. We want them to be assembled by the time the mattresses come because they do offer "set-up" for which we paid $200 extra.

What we're waiting for now is the man we gave our old bed to, to come and get it. We paid $3000 for the big queen four poster and another thousand for the mattresses that haven't been used long and I'll be throwing in a new $200 comforter set we never used because the color clashed with our periwinkle walls. I told the huz to give all this to one of the poor people he knows from his volunteer place, but he mentioned the free bed to somebody in a bar and I'm beginning to think the guy just heard "free" and jumped on it, because he is in no rush.

Funny you mention them. I used one of their mattresses for 10 years and was always happy with it. It started looking very raggedy and sunk in so went and bought a new one, they had a record of what model I had so I bought the exact same mattress. I hated it, very uncomfortable, didn't belive it was the same as I had. They don't refund your money but give credit toward another mattress, I spent another $300 and got another mattress, I hated that one as well, been a guest mattress ever since.

It's an easy one hand corner lift to get a fitted sheet under.
Good point and something to test in looking at mattresses.

We moved our mattress to the guest room when we decided we wanted a softer mattress. My DD told me it was really uncomfortable so I checked it out and she was right. Bought a good mattress topper before her next visit. A DS raved when they got home about how comfy the bed had been.
