Beware: Social Security Is Demanding Money Back Due To Their Own Errors!

What annoys me is governments turning over petty debts to debt collectors.

My mum had a part state pension (thanks Dad) and a part federal pension. When she died I immediately notified both pension funds and her bank. The bank account was closed and the money transferred into a deceased person account that could not be accessed until after probate was settled. The federal government continued to pay, as per policy, for one month after her death and the money went into the deceased estate bank account. The state government sent a letter of demand for, I think, three days of overpayment because she died three days too soon for their system.

I wrote back informing them of the contact details of the solicitor handling the will/probate but they continued to demand payment.

I ignored the letter so they handed the matter over to debt collectors. For a petty debt of less than a weeks worth of part pension! Dad would have been furious. I certainly was.
