Grew up in the 60's listening to Rev Graham's radio show The Hour of Decision. Our family would listen to it every Sunday before our Sunday supper which was the biggest meal of the week, and usually the only real meal of the week since we were about as poor as Church mice. RIP Mr Graham. You brought salvation, hope and meaning to many.

Really loved his sermons. Liked the fact that he insisted on a salary and did not use the hype most of the other preachers on television did. I read that when he could no longer travel to the WH, Obama went to him at his log cabin. Thought he was a humble man of God.

I don't recall us ever listening to him, but I do know of him, famous man. Rest in peace Billy.

Billy Graham once said, "My home is in Heaven. I'm just traveling through this world".
And God said, "Well done my good and faithful servant". Matthew 25:21

Welcome Home,Billy!

"When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost."

Throughout history there have been many examples of how one person, can influence thousands of others - for good or bad - through the power of speech and spectacle. I just wonder how many people who were at one of those rallies looked back on them and thought, "That guy really new how to work the crowd. He had us eating out of his hand - and he actually had us believing him" Of course now when we look back, we realise that it was all show - a big spectacular, over-the-top, star studded show. That's all it was, a show, nothing more - but nobody could do it like Billy Graham.

Certainly respect your opinion, however for many Billy brought them life, hope and change. That is undeniable.

Billy Graham

"Since his ministry began in 1947, Graham conducted more than 400 crusades in 185 countries and territories on six continents.

"The first Billy Graham Crusade, held September 13–21, 1947, in the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was attended by 6,000 people. Graham was 28 years old. He called them crusades, after the medieval Christian forces who conquered Jerusalem".

"He would rent a large venue, such as a stadium, park, or street. As the sessions became larger, he arranged a group of up to 5,000 people to sing in a choir. He would preach the gospel and invite people to come forward (a practice begun by Dwight L. Moody). Such people were called inquirers and were given the chance to speak one-on-one with a counselor, to clarify questions and pray together. The inquirers were often given a copy of the Gospel of John or a Bible study booklet".

"In Moscow, in 1992, one-quarter of the 155,000 people in Graham's audience went forward at his call.[17] During his crusades, he has frequently used the altar call song, "Just As I Am".[37]

"Graham was offered a five-year, $1 million contract from NBC to appear on television opposite Arthur Godfrey, but he had prearranged commitments. He turned down the offer in order to continue his touring revivals.[25] Graham had crusades in London, which lasted 12 weeks, and a New York City crusade in Madison Square Garden in 1957, which ran nightly for 16 weeks".

In the Summer of 1964, at the age of 21, I traveled to Columbus Ohio, to where our Pastor had been transferred, to help him out in the Crusade held in Jet Stadium. I was an usher, and even though I had accepted Christ as my Lord & Savior a few years before, I welcomed the opportunity to do it "publicly" and went forward on Youth night. Four years later, when Billy's 1968 Crusade came to Pittsburgh, at Pitt Stadium, I sang in the choir and was a counselor. My "future Wife to be" went forward and accepted Jesus then. I thank God for the life and ministry of Billy Graham.

There have been many televangelists
Most have been obviously banking their speaking ability

Not so with the Reverend Graham

The media dines on the good and regurgitates their twisted slant into our platters, and we, their customers, love it, come back for more, tell others

He transcended denominations

He was gifted, yessir

His gift was from God

I remember watching the Portland Crusade on TV, when they had a rainy service one night. Billy was saying that he was told "Yes, it rains in Portland......but it's a DRY rain"!

On a purely mercenary note ...

Does anyone know if Rev.Graham left anyone in charge of his ministry?
All I know is that Franklin Graham, Billy's son, has his own ministry called "Samaritan's Purse" that is doing a lot of wonderful things worldwide and rated at the top for reputable charities that can be trusted to use their donations wisely and effectively.

His team was there for all of the states that were affected by the hurricanes...even Puerto Rico with his own airplanes delivering supplies and airlifting people out. He has a successful ministry to reach out to every child, in third world countries, with Christmas presents. And he sends a catalog out every year with pages and pages of serious worldwide needs that his organization is meeting...everything from installing pumps for clean water, to seeds and training for farming, to livestock chickens cows and goats etc., to building schools and hospitals, etc

Capt Lightening, Gary O's post #16 was correct. One shouldn't stereotype.
