I am now responsible for my daughter's five silky hens and they are keeping me busy each morning cleaning their coop, checking that they have fresh water and plenty of laying mash. I give them the freedom of the backyard because January in Sydney is very hot and they spend a lot of time relaxing in the shade of the fernery.

At different times throughout the day I give them various snacks to relieve their boredom - kitchen scraps, spoonfuls of canned 4 bean mix, handfuls of cracked corn or rolled oats and freeze dried meal worms that have been soaked in warm water to soften them.

When they feel inclined, they explore the yard, scratching in the garden mulch and the small patch of grass that I laughingly call "the lawn". They are enthusiastic terra formers.
