Blankets, duvets, quilts, comforters... it's that time of the year

What does everyone use year-round?

We, as in dear husband and I, jostle between a lightweight goose-down duvet from spring until early fall (now), and a heavy-weight goose-down duvet for the winter.

As for wrapping-up while sitting in the living room watching television, I keep a nice cozy comforter folded and stashed away behind the easy-chair, and I use it all the time once the weather dips down. Comforter works great in keeping me safe, too, whenever I stumble upon a spooky show.

As kids we had blankets and quilts which were homemade.
 

A very lightweight quilt for summer. It can be tossed off if too hot.

For fall, the medium weight comforter is used. When it becomes really cold, I put an old wool blanket under it.

The window is open all year round for sleeping. The room is kept at *62. Naturally it’s warmer in summer. Whatever the outside temperature brings in. Never use A/C.

*I should be using Celsius. The thermostat is set in F so that’s what I quote.
 
DH has some homemade quilts in storage. They were designed for double beds, not for a queen. Also, they’re too heavy. Funny, heavy blankets were a big favourite for Christmas gifts last year.
 

I use a light quilted blanket in the summer months and a variety of comforters along with a thick , soft , warm winter blanket. I’m also in favour of leaving a window open to circulate air no matter how cold it gets. The dogs have their beds on the bed with fleece blankets and I don’t care what anyone thinks. They don’t sleep on the floor.😝

I have a small bedroom but refuse to get a single size bed. I have a queen size bed because my 3 dogs sleep on the bed with me. :)🐕🐶

I use a light weight comforter in warm weather, add another one for winter.

I’ve got a queen sized bed too and so does my husband. Since he gets up at 5:00 to go to work, I have my own bed and I’ve got 2 dogs and sometimes a cat. In the summer she usually stays outside hunting at night but as the weather cools she comes in and wants to be with us. Plus there isn’t even room for 2 people, 2 dogs and a cat in one bed. Not if you want to be comfortable which I do. ☺️
 
I leave my window open all year too! I love quilts! In REALLY, REALLY cold weather,I have a couple Hudson Bay wool blankets.
I've bought dozens of dog beds and mats for my dog but he likes to sleep on the bare floor year round.

Why do you leave the window open year round? I would think that would really run up your utilities.
 
I lived for decades at elevation 6500 ft with snow 6 months out of the year. Wouldn't be without my down comforter. Now I'm at 5200 ft in the high desert. For the last 3 months it's been only a sheet to cover me, or nothing at all. It's predicted to be unseasonably below freezing the next 3 nights so I tossed a fleecy blanket on my bed just in case. The fleecy blanket seems to be enough in cold weather now.
 
I keep a quilted full-size comforter on the bed during the day.

During the summer months, I use a top sheet at night.

I sleep in a twin bed and keep a full-size waffle weave thermal blanket on the bed during the fall/winter.

If we have a cold snap I fold the blanket in half to create an extra layer until things warm up.

I also keep one of those attractive but annoyingly small woven throws folded on the ottoman next to my chair.

Another vote for leaving the bedroom window open year-round.

I also add a fan to circulate the air and create a sort of white noise that muffles the sounds of the city.
 
Y’all will laugh at me but having grown up in Southern California I didn’t know about cold weather bedding. Our high school group went to British Columbia one April and part of our visit was touring one of the local museums, part of which had a house furnished like the settlers in the 1800’s would have. We were all puzzled by the feather bed (it was all fluffed/mounded up); “how do they stay on the bed?” We asked. “Wouldn’t they just roll off?” Ah well, even ‘sophisticated’ CA kids had something to learn 😉
 
We sleep with a cotton sheet and the chenille spread in the summer. Run the A/C. No pj’s no matter the season. We also run the ceiling fan which sometimes makes it too cool for me. But Ron is a furnace! He runs SO hot, and pumps out enough body heat that all I have to do is curl up next to him and in his sleep he’ll reach out an arm and gather me in and then I’m toasty, sometimes to the point that I’m kicking the covers off.

Winter we run the heat and add a low-loft down comforter to the end of the bed in case we need to pull it up. Mostly we don’t.
 
Use cotton sheets and a lightweight comforter during 9 months of the year and then during our colder months.... we use flannel sheets and a heavier comforter / plus a thick warm blanket.
 
I use a flannel sheet for a blanket all year round but don't sleep under it the whole night unless I get cold. In winter, I use a crocheted afghan that my mother made for me. I have about six of them that she made through out the years. Some are warmer than others depending on the weight.
 
Only one blanket on the bed, year round.......Vellux original......super light, but warm......summer, gets folded back if i don't need it.
Ever since i had my knee replacements, can't stand heavy blankets.
Been using these type of blankets for years......they almost last forever.
 
Joining the long list of those here who live by sleeping with their bedroom window opened or cracked.

I sleep more soundly and wake more refreshed with an open or cracked window, and I believe it's healthier to breath fresh air through the night.

As for good old-fashioned homemade quilts, I remember the weight of them. Took me a while to get used to goose-down duvets being that they're so light.

My dog sleeps on the bed with me, too. He has his own side of the bed and is good about not trying to hog the bed. The first night after I adopted him he hopped up on the bed and went over to his own side and stretched out and that's where he has slept ever since. In the winter, he has a fuzzy blankie I put over him to keep him warm. Sometimes he sleeps with his head on the pillow, just like a person. He is a very spoiled doggie, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

How sweet is that, your newly adopted pooch hopping-up onto your bed his very first night at your house! :love:
